Protect your pets - dealing with cannabis toxicity

Since it was mentioned in another post today that a user's dog got into his stash, I thought I'd put the information I posted out here in it's own thread so the information is more visible.

Toxin
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

Source
Hashish, marijuana, and hemp, Cannabis.

General Information
Pets are more commonly poisoned from marijuana through ingestion other than inhalation. THC is the toxin that causes the symptoms and is absorbed quickly after ingestion. THC has strong antiemetic effects which make it difficult to successfully induce vomiting to remove the toxin from the pet. Most animals will recover, but it may take 1-3 days.

Toxic Dose
Depends on the concentration of THC and the form of marijuana ingested.

Signs
Ataxia, dilated pupils, 'glazed' eyes, drop in body temperature, increase or decrease in heart rate, bizarre behavior, hyperesthesiajavascript:popupWin1('/dictionary_term.cfm?term=hyperesthesia',%2050,%2050,%20350,%20300), disorientation, somnolencejavascript:popupWin1('/dictionary_term.cfm?term=somnolence',%2050,%2050,%20350,%20300), depression (may last 18-36 hours), comajavascript:popupWin1('/dictionary_term.cfm?term=coma',%2050,%2050,%20350,%20300), excitation is seen occasionally, drooling, tremors, respiratory depressionjavascript:popupWin1('/dictionary_term.cfm?term=respiratory%20depression',%2050,%2050,%20350,%20300), or death.

Immediate Action
Induce vomiting. Seek veterinary attention.

Veterinary Care
General treatment: The induction of vomiting may be continued, gastric lavage is performed, and activated charcoalhttp://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?articleid=1369 is administered.
Supportive treatment: The temperature, pulse, and respiration are monitored and different medications are given depending upon the signs present. A safe environment should be provided where the pet cannot hurt itself or others while disorientated.
Specific treatment: Unavailable. To confirm the diagnosis, urine levels of THC can be determined in the laboratory.

Prognosis
Fair

How to induce vomiting
Provided you act quickly enough, you can easily induce vomiting in your pet with a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide.
The appropriate dose of hydrogen peroxide is one teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight. If you have an oral syringe, one teaspoon equals 5 cc or 5 ml. Once given, walk your dog around or gently shake the stomach area to mix the peroxide with the stomach contents. Vomiting should occur within 15 to 20 minutes.

Visiting your vet
Your vet is concerned with the well-being of your animal. In a typical situation the vet is not concerned with where it came from, only what it was and how much. Don't let paranoia get in the way of saving your pet's life.

Stay safe! :)

Howdy, Interesting post. My first experience iwth MJ injested by dogs was 3 years ago. Our newest pug puppy, Turbo, approx 16 weeks old, developed unusual symptoms. He seemed almost paralysed, and unresponsive. He was pick of the litter, extremely bright, and very active. We took him to the vet after his condition did not improve over about 6 hours. I was seriously bummed and had no idea what could be wrong with him. While we waited in the waiting room, Turbo finally barked. Then, he jumped up and sprinted into the vets back room. He wharfed up a plastic baggie in front of the vet. THe vet smiled at us and told us he wouldn't charge us for the visit, if we left, and took the bag with us. He wasn't mad, he just was very busy. He said weed wasn't a big dog problem, because unless it's sweet and fragrant they usually won't eat it.
It wasn't my weed. This bag had some exotic White Widow tid-bits still inside. I asked my wife but she denied ownwership. My kids swore up and down it wasn't theirs either, and I believed them. I did sell a Stratocaster earlier that day to a younger guy and his girlfriend, but they didn't look high or smell like weed. THey must have dropped it by accident. Hell, I would have bartered for some White widow, but oh well. Turbo is fine now, and could easily be a dope detection dog. He can sniff/smell it in your pocket, or even if you try hide it. All in all it was a weird experience.

This is good advice both to keep it away from pets and what to do if the worst happens. If you are paranoid tell the vet a friend was keeping the pet and that's where it happened. Vets don't care.

There are a lot of other appraoches I would try first, from homeopathic stuff to accupuncture.

Homeopathy is just water.
It uses an insane principle that once water touches something it retains the "essence" of that item, and the more you dilute it the stronger it becomes.
By this reckoning every drop glass of water you drink would have the essence of enough toxins, dinosaur piss, and peasant shit to drop you on the spot.

Howdy, I've used accupuncture with some success for serious back pain(multiple disc herniations, and nerve damage) and spasms. Although the meditation, and accupuncture help:peace:, they do not completely relieve my pain, and only certain strains of MJ are actually strong enough to deter pain. Vicodin HP is god-send I could not function without, and even though it can be addictive, MS Contin in proper doses helps immensely as well.
If your dog is in pain, find a vet you trust and listen to what they say. Their experience and wisdom, is far better than random guesses, especially if you love your dog. My pug, Lil Mel Gibson, is my best bud, we hang out, do a lot of walking, and he's always willing to chill.

I call bullshit on all of it.. this is just because people freak out over stupid shit. There have been plenty of tests inducing small animals with 100's of times more POT than what a human Could consume (must be allot of pot)

these signs are just being high symptoms... Depression?... yeah hes stoned!...what he didnt play fetch after he eat a pound of weed?? hmm i wonder why..

I hate people.

There is nothing in pot that can kill anyone. (.) period!

shut the fuck up!!
this isnt posted FOR YOU,its for folks that have a tendency to over react when they see a pet/loved one not acting normal after eating weed,it didnt say anything about a fucking pound,i know for a fact that if i see my PUPPY acting down or unresponsive after doing what a puppy does(getting into everything) this'll help me keep cool and collected while i figure out my next move, and for the fucking record,a marijuana overdose in a small pet WILL kill them, because when something goes into a COMA and they are not eating or drinking on they're own guess what happens???

do some research before you come in here putting your bullshit ass 2-cents in

i thought the LD-50 rating of cannabis has not been identified....

just goes to show that every single person/animal reacts differently to everything.

just my father wouldnt throw away his money for a dog. Small, big, green, with freckles its a fuckin dog! Now, I love my dogs.. but people were raised differently when there is hunger. You might not have a problem spending hundreds of dollars for anything on a dog. but for some people dogs are tools, not decorations and play things.

Well listen i understand your all passionate about your animals.. and in a way we are trying to say the same thing with pot not hurting the animal and dont waste your money.....i thought this was the owner of the thread i was talking too and dont even understand why you talking to me.. w saying the same thing but different you asshole.

these tests have been administered to small animals dumb ass... you think they test on cows or something... mice...spider monkeys ...

concerned like a bitch. why dont you just do some research or something...

there is nothing in pot that can kill... again.. PERIOD!

im from the gutter,so i know what its like to grow up hungry sometimes, but for you to say dogs are tools and not playthings makes me think that you live on a farm.
when you live in an apartment all your life dogs become more than tools, they become part of the family and im not one to watch a family member going thru something thats un-normal and not atleast help,i understand your 1800's mentality because to growing up on a farm, you just dont have the time to build a connection with a pet because in that regard a dog is a tool(corralling sheep, goats and even live stock, but in the city,well....you get my drift
