pruning while flowering.........

i pruned the fan leaves off all of my plants accept a couple once my buds started getting a decent size and i noticed that the buds on the plants i had trimmed boosted in size a little bit over the next couple of days while the ones i didnt trim were left behind a little bit. i decided to go ahead and trim the others up. I have read that it is strain depended on whether its good to prune fan leaves during flowering, but my strain (northern lights) seems to love it. Bottom line, its more important for light to be on bud than on a leaf. 50 percent of light is a lot to me, i want as much light and nutes going to my buds.

some bad advise here, like its allready been said tug the yellow fan leafs and if they come off then thre obviously completely dead so its ok, but if not just leave them, thats how it would be out in the wild so i just follow that rule.

If you trim the fan leaves off your plant your an idiot str8 up. the bud does not photosynthesize at near the rate as the fan leaves do. If you pull off the fan leaves you pretty much put your plants on a hard core diet. I know that it sounds like a good idea to get more light to your buds so they get supper fat big yield yady yada yada but its not a good idea. its a horrible idea. google that shit bro

I have done an experiment to see if clipping fan leaves works or not. Well.. I sorta cheated. I did not clip all the fan leaves, just a few.. but what I did was place a 42W 2700K CFL directly next to the buds of a few plants. The other plants I let grow under my 600W just the same. I found that when light is directly on the buds they swell up way better than if it's just regular light on the leaves. The best growers I have seen definitely trim up their plants and clean them out so light can get into the lower canopy. You gotta be smart about it though... take the leaves that look like they are on their way out anyways.

I really don't know too much about pruning when they're budding. Hince why I'm on here. But I have been clipping the very minimum off during vegetative state. Just enough so my CFL'S can penetrate to the lower tops, that way they can grow up nice and strong too. And as I've said, not too knowledgeable on flowering just yet, but for veg, it works GREAT. You want your lower limbs to branch up to they can produce as much bud as possible as well.

I realize that this is an old post, but this issue came up for me in a recent grow, mostly do to overcrowding in an indoor space. It has always been my experience that with two polarizing opinions, the truth almost always lies somewhere in the middle. Some people like to prune all the way through the plants life cycle, some swear that you should never do this. I have personally seen excellent results using both techniques, and think they both deserve merit. I personally do modest foliage removal, and some lesser bud removal all through the grow. This is largely based on my previous knowledge or grape growing, where much of the plant is cut back over the growing season, to encourage only the best growth, removing all fruit and leaf, that is either to small or poorly positioned. I think that this same mentality should be applied to marijuana. I believe that is is best to do most of the heavy trimming before flowering, but some surgical extraction of week buds, or extraneous leaves will only help your grow in the long run. Once I move into late flowering, I do tend to start to drop a bit more of the middle and lower leaves, always with good results. Late in flower once the buds have lots of good sugar leaf all over them, I feel like it does more for the plant to get more light on the buds at that point, and not the fan leaves. I would challenge the people here arguing counterpoint, to actually try it the other way before dismissing what could be useful information. In conclusion, most of the successful, high yielding growers I know almost all advocate for a certian amount of defoliation during all stages of the grow, some do a little more that others, but all of us do some. Your room, lighting, strain, and level of overall expertise are more important factors than clipping a few fan leaves anyway, a good grow, will be a good grow either way, and some good pruning(or lack of)won't turn a bad grow good.

Bingo! That's what I have come to believe also. I prune in veg for bud sites and trim through flowering getting rid of lower branches and the closer to the end of flowering, about the last week or so I get pretty aggressive on removing the fan leaves.
