pruning while flowering

The lower buds are generally puny anyway, so clipping the top leaves to get more light won't result in any major gain, and effect the size of your actual cola(s).

Have you thought about trying to train the plant a little? I have seen some beautiful canopies where the top cola is trained to the side to allow other branches to develop. Go check out MrFishys tutorial. Not sure if you can do this while budding though.

I usually train/bend/tuck things around, but try not to cut anything off. The fan leaves are the engine that convert the energy that allows the plant to grow. Don't remove them if you don't absolutely have to.
