Punk Dream - 2022 Bagseed Grow

Purple Dream(outdoor-local, bagseed) x unk Father. Calling this generation -Punk Dream- Regs for now.. Because tbh, it just sounds cool!

This Grow is off-sight, Im growing 'over yonder' for a disabled and unable-to-grow neighbor that needs his meds. Win/Win, I get to grow something new and my numbers are not effected. I get more experience too..

With Reg. seeds you never know what's going to pop up but some pretty wicked strains have originated from unk pollinated bagseed.

A Native I know says that the environment a seed develops in, is where it will thrive best. How lucky that my neighbor wants to reuse seeds from last year..

Since we are already in Day9(start Feb 19 @ 3pm) of this grow, I'll sum it up real quick to catch up.

Ended up sorting through a bunch of seeds using the 'dimple method' to guesstimate female seeds, cant wait to see how that works out.. A local and fellow traveler suggested I try it. Anyways.

Dropped the chosen 19 seeds in a well water filled cup, pH7ish and 223ppm, and placed it on a triple stack of larger propagator bottom pans that sit on top of a seedling heater mat. Ooh, this is going to raise questions. I can sense it!

The first two seeds popped within the first 24hrs, got planted in a small 3x4 slot propagator filled with seedling soil, and were tagged green to represent the first 24hrs.

The next ten were tagged yellow, representing the second 24hr period, and they filled up the small propagator. As if it were planned.

At the end if the third period, four more made it. These would have been tagged red but instead got put under the windowsill as a control group to see the efficiency of the setup I am running. Afterall, I am only after 6 plants. And preferably the female sort.

The rest of the seeds were unopened and got tossed, they didnt fit my 36 hour germination bracket for regular seeds. Got to have standards!

Overall 16 out of 19 bagseeds germinated within 36hrs, not bad considering!

Now we know who popped when and in which order they broke through. Soon we will find out what kind of vigor each one has. Even before any of them is a "plant".. Very important!

Cotyledons are not leaf, "a plant is roots stem and leaf", but I am no way shape or form anyone who you should take legal advice from.

To get all this to work I insulated the mat from the hard surface below with 3 pot holders. Put the larger dome over the small propagator and enclosed the setup in a passively vented 1/2in foam and masking tape box under the stove vent hood of my bunkhouse camper. Might as well get some use of that space, it's just been sitting there since all this covid madness started anyways..

The seedling mat is still on 24hrs a day, it rarely gets above 50 during the day out here right now. Gotta do whatcha gotta do, good thing I can plug this sucker into an outlet. Offgrid youd need a solar setup of sorts to handle this, but it's really not that many Ah.

Timing the daylight hours, I have a timer setup to control the 13.5w/1200 5000k "Full Spectrum" cheapo led growlight from a home improvement store chain. Found it in the impulse buy aisle!

Fast forward: I have ten left, 2 didnt like getting uncovered for an hour on Day8. They preferred a more humid environment, cant use that, so good riddance! There is also no control group, they've been tossed. But I did find out I was about 7 days ahead of the control group on Day8.

The last ten are now holding steady at between 1.5 and 2 inches. Have not watered or fed them since planting them.

The cotys show minor signs of depletion(good thing) and true leaf growth has been symmetrical. Genetic traits visible, groupings tall and small. Both have an even canopy in their own respects.

I've attached some pictures to portrait the 1st 9 days. Saw right before lights out earlier that the first true leaf are coming in. I'll take a picture tomorrow and post it.

Update... Just transplanted from the starter tray to an 18oz Dixie cup each.

The cups have about an inch of perlite in the bottom, are filled with Mother Earth 'Groundswell', and have four 1/4in wide slits in the bottom for drainage and ventilation.

Sprayed the 2knuckle2finger deep transplant holes with 'one pump' of fine misted ph6.8 water. After transplanted, they each received 5ml of water in 4 spots around the plant and close to the cups edge.

I want those roots reaching for that moisture once the shock subsides. That Mother Earth stuff comes with the right moisture in the bag. So I dump the whole bag and equalize the mixture before testing/using any. Hopefully this will save a lot of guessing later on when the soil mix needs supplemented.

Keeping the humidity dome and heat mat on tonight to reduce stress while they get accustomed to their new environment and they get those first nutrients from the soil.

Really hoping they dont burn, this soil smells crazy rich.

The 13.5w 5500k home depot led has been doing pretty good but now that I'm at a different stage, looks like I'll have to do some rotating to keep them all even.

Anyways, cheers!

Update: Its day 23 until 5pm tomorrow.

Plants are doing better than I had expected out of a home depot light, even better in some aspects!

The lens/cover of the led bar creates a couple of linear hotspots.. Which in my case really isnt a bad thing. Let me explain.

The plants are spaced kinda goofy in the nursery tray in those Dixie cups. Seems like a single led bar wouldnt be able to do the trick due to the width of the grow area, but keeping the light at 6 inches the hot spot lines are perfectly across the top of the outer rows keeping everyone happy.

I do rotate the plants between the three rows depending on their growth. Here(pic) you can see that I keep the biggest plant squat by keeping it in the brightest spot. I am also stretching the ones that need that as well.

What you cant see in the pic, is that I have white foam board as doors on my range. This reflects more light than the back row has available against a brown background. Also good, creates an 'inbetween' area regarding lighting levels. Bright, inbetween, and hotspot only. Giving me more control over my canopy(pic).

So far so good.

I can imagine this being a good spot to bonsai potential mothers over winter.. 13.5w/1200lumen to keep strains around year after year sounds like multiple outdoor harvests per season to me..!! Let's see what else we can get going this year... Northern Skunk maybe, with its 6-8 week flower rhythm is an option?

I've notified local fellow gardeners to come pick up some of these phenos. I have extra plants that need gone anyways, so I can start selecting strains for my personal garden. Dont want to get over my 'granted' numbers at any time, that is a definite no-no.

ALTHOUGH I do support unlimiting and unleashing private cultivation, I do respect the fact that I have the right to grow a limited number of plants. I'll leave it at that. We got weed to grow!

My mind is made up on the Punk Dream phenos. Im only keeping 4 so the rest is first come, first serve. Plus I need to start soaking some autos for another project.

I built the auto planters today out of fencing and prepped all the things.. But that will be on another thread for my Auto Diesel Outdoor 3x3 Cage Grow.

Btw: I like variety, helps overcome strain tolerances so I'll be doing 2 auto grows in this setup and this season. The later run being Auto Pineapple. Again another thread.

As always, chime in if I can do something better. We are all life long learners, until we ain't.

Anyways, cheers everyone!

Day 25:

While checking on things today I noticed a clear split of traits in this batch of phenotypes. Mind you that I have been rotating the plants to control the canopy height all this time, so everyone had the same chances to stretch.

Figured I'd post a pic. After tomorrow, its only going to be 3 plants. Which would you pick?

If this is going to be an outdoor grow I’d wait a while to cull out the under-performers. I like to put out my outdoor plants when they are a foot or two tall.

Agreed!

And theyll be inside for a while, but 6 of these are going to new homes tomorrow. I've got to pick 3 to keep and see where it goes from there. Unfortunately-fortunately(?) I'm in a place where numbers matter.

Still waiting for one last pickup and it's about time to top..

Its Day38 btw. Plants got 50ml of EA total water, 15ml EA of 1/4 strength clonex, and intermittent LST(bending) so far. Considering 1/8 strength bloom nutrient bottom soak to help with stress during HST(topping)..

Looks like I need more vertical room and more light. As an afterthought, the 18oz cups might have been a bad idea for my situation and setup. I've been rotating like mad to keep things even, an extra 2in of clearance would do a LOT of good right now.

Noted. Learned for next time.
