Puttting 400watt in a 1000watt ballast

Can you do this or will it blow it?

it will blow straight off or (if it's made very well) will burn super bright (i.e. very very hot) for a few seconds before bits of it melt, then it will explode showering you in molten metal and glass. good luck.

no worries, i whacked in an edit btw. just so you don't try it.

How about the other way around (ie 1000 watt in 400 watt ballast)?

the ballast would be unable to fire the bulb.......
