Question about lighting

LED growing hasn't been perfected yet, so you may find little help if you do buy them. You'll be like a LED pioneer, or another LED pioneer. The ones I've looked at are way over-priced considering the technology isn't proven.

The LED lights do work, quite well. HighTimes mag did a good article on it back in I think Dec. 07 or so.
It is supposed to be closer to the required light spectrum that HID lights.

I think its the future like HID lighting was back in the day, but that being said you will not catch me giving up my HPS for some LED's any time soon. On the other hand, I don't use CFL's and lots do so maybe I am an HID snob.

Hi All
Be very carefull with LEDs at the mo, they may be OK for pot mums or lettuce, but I doubt you'd get a successfull flowering out of them, theyre just too big for the area you want to use/they will support.
also theres no mention of the LEDs output, theres every chance that at that price they are just Crimbo tree light LEDs.
I'm reasearching building some at the mo, and you really need to be using high output LEDs at the very least, in these numbers.
OR fewer very high output LEDs, IE 1 or 3 watters, and I recon ya still need these in reasonable munbers, 40 + per lamp.
Do a search for my previouse posts for a bit more info, if ya fancy.
Toodle pip.

Well, if HighTimes says so, then it must be true? I guess I was basing my post on the other 500-1000 I've read claiming they (LED's) are not ready for the big time. My bad.
I, for one, await their perfection . . . here with my measley 2-600HPS/and T-5's.

There was a recent HT write-up on this thing. It's supposed to blow the UFO out of the water and to date, the Procyon is the only LED grow light that appears to be worth a damn. I'd love to get one or two for veg. I'll stick with the HPS for flower, though. Anyway, the price is steep, but you'll be getting huge savings in electricity. I'll be taking a hard look at these when I can afford one(or two).

Hi Folks.
there is another decent lamp, that uses 50 odd of the same/similar Cree LEDs.
That too is 600 bucks ish.
I'm gonna be building myself a couple of new lamps soon, I'm gonna be using the 3 watt star type LEDs, theyre cheaper. But still I recon around 50 LEDs are needed in each lamp, I intend building two, one for sitting either side of a 400 watt HID, at first at least, then I'll experiment with flowering exclusively under LED.
The Time is NOW poeple, (or pretty soon anyway), but still gonna be very expensive for a while yet, unless you build your own, and theyre still not what you'd call cheap to build yourself.

Thanks for all the input. I havent really read much about led's so I figured I would ask on here. Im thinking about tryin it out just kind of as an experiment. I had a successful grow a year ago with around 200 watts of CFL lighting, so if the LED does not work I can always go back to the CFL or purchase a small HID. I recently purchased a low profile hydro DWC system with a 9 gal res. It has 8 spots in it but I think I might only use two per grow so the plants do not compete too much with each other. I have 5 fem PPP seeds I bought from nirvana so I am pretty excited about growing those. Does anyone has experience with growing PPP? Thanks!!
