Question about soil

Hello! I am a going to be moving my plants into 5 gallon pots in about 3 weeks and thats where they will be when i move them into flower. The soil I have is Foxfarm happy frog and Foxfarm Ocean forest. I also have perlite. I plan to do a mix of the three as when researching people have said they can do very well for the flower stage. From what ive saw the mix will be 3 scoops Happy frog/2 scoops ocean forest/1 scoop perlite and mix thoroughly. Or is there a better combination of the three? Should I be ordering extra nutrients also? Or should these soils get me through the flowering phase. I am trying to order everything now as its taking extra time to be shipped out for most companies even amazon.

I know there are tons of soil options and better options but these are soils that i have plentiful as they were shared with me so im not trying to spend extra money on a whole new soil setup for now.

Can't say much about the mix because I just use FFOF with some Coco mixed in, but you will want some extra nutes, even straight FFOF will only get you about 2-4 weeks into flower depending on the plants. I like MegaCrop or similar myself for the simplicity. I'm using General Organics right now but I'm going back to dry nutes when they run out cause they're just too expensive and messy.

what dry nutes do you use?

I use your mix, equal portions with good results. I amend mine with an organic granular fertilizer and just water.

MegaCrop is the dry nutrient I have the most experience with. You order it directly from their site.

i see. so youre using 2 table spoons per gallon of potting mix? meaning 10 table spoons for a 5 gallon pot?

I see it now, how much do you use for veg/flower? i typed it into google and it seems there are 100 different opinions from this site even on how much you should use and some people saying they needed extra nutes during flower and some saying you dont need to add anything else

Megacrop was giving away free samples for the cost of shipping. It is enough for 2 grows at least and lets you try it.

Like I said I've been using GO this run through but if I recall I used 2-3g per gallon in veg and 5-6g per gallon in flower. I used it both with and without other amendments and while they can help they sure aren't necessary. Except maybe some CalMag depending on your lighting.

And as mentioned they usually have a promotion going for a free sample that's plenty to get through a grow or two.

i just checked the website and they had 75% off the 1000g as the promotion currently but its sold out and wont be restocked for now due to covid. so im probably going to just grab it off of amazon for now. 1000g is plenty right?

how much do you use per veg/flower tsonige? i already am using foxfarm/ocean forest currently. and do you use it everytime you water?

Coronavirus be fucking everything up! 1000g is plenty. Think about it this way, 10g a week should feed 2 plants in flower for almost 2 years with that bag. You may find you use more but still, more than enough for a first grow

I use FFHF as my soil with 30% perlite. I don't need to feed for 4 weeks or so, I watch the plants and can tell when time to start feeding. I put 1/2 tsp in a qt of water every water. It is usually every 2 to 3 days. I feed the same from veg on. I add Big Bud then Overdrive to it during flower.

when do you know that they need feeding? by the leaves turning orange/yellowish? meaning they need more nutes?

I got a recipe from a member here but just tweeked it a bit I did like 40 happy frog 40 cocoa loco the rest orchid plus( it has charcoal ,perlite and 3 different kinds of wood chips) and they love it drains perfectly and holds water properly.

They slow their growth, leave get a little lighter. I don't go crazy with the nutes. FFHF has a lot in it already. I have seen a grower put 50% FFOF 50% FFHF 30% perlite with Mycorrhizae sprinkled between the layers and never feed a nute the entire grow.

thats interesting, im definitely sticking with the FFHF and FFOF though since i have a ton of it. but i appreciate the idea. i will keep it in mind for the next grow when i run out of all this

Yeah i knew the soils had alot thats why i wasnt sure if i would need any extra nutes. Maybe I will try 50/50 with Happy frog and ocean forest rather than the 3/2. have you tried both?

I only use the FFHF. It is a reasonable price and I have no complaints about it.

This thread has been very helpful for “this here” newbie. I am following and reading all the comments but just haven’t commented until now. The balances of soil and nutrients sometimes gets a little overwhelming for me. I have read about different “organic” mixtures but buying all the various components just felt a little nutty right now. I just started some girls from seed in March. First grow. They were ones that were given to me. I have since ordered new ones because the seeds were VERY old and not stored well so they had a very slow start.

Okay... back to the point... I repotted the first two girls yesterday into 5 gal and used the 3-2-1 ratio of FFHF, FFOF, and perlite from the original post/inquiry of this thread. I tried to find the Megacrop but ran into the same problem as everyone else with shipping/ordering. I ended up ordering some Fox Farm nutrients from Amazon about a week or so ago, hoping it would help along the way when I need to add. I ended up with a set containing Grow Big, Big Bloom and Tiger Bloom/Buds & Blooms. I planned on watching the girls to hopefully gauge when I needed to add to their watering. Has anyone had any experience with any of those?

The very first indication that you need to start feeding, is the bottom fan leaves will begin to turn a bland yellow colour. This is Nitrogen deficiency. As soon as you see this, you need to start feeding. If you don't, the N deficiency will work its way all the way up the plant, and other deficiencies will start showing up quite rapidly, causing all manner of potentially permanent plant damage.

Fun fact: Nitrogen deficiency shows at the bottom of the plant first, because it's a mobile nutrient. That means that the plant can move N around the plant where it's needed most, and since the new growth is the most important from the perspective of the plant, the N is moved from the lower leaves to the new growth.
