Question on Lucas Formula PPM

Why would 5ml/10ml GH Flora micro/bloom lucas formula res only read 575 ppm?

3.5 gallon res. This is now a full nute cycle, so shouldn't it be much higher?
As 5ml equals 1 teaspoon, I put in 4 teaspoons of micro, and 8 teaspoons or bloom in 4 gallons of water.

I've calibrated my ppm meter with 1,500 NaCI calibration solution, so I know it's accurate.

Thought it was 8/16? Dunno it doesnt matter just mix them to whatever your target ppm is and keep the 2:1 ratio

It is 8/16. 5 ml = 1 TEASPOON.

15 ml = 1 TABLESPOON.

If you put that much in, it would be a lot high than 575.

2ml per Liter of GH products Flora series is approximately 200 ppm.

You did 15ml / 2ml = 7.5 x 200 ppm = 1500 ppm for a Liter, or 400ppm per Gallon according to some quick math

so, this means you put in 20 ml Micro, 40 ml Bloom
60 mL total / 2ml = 30 x 200ppm = 6000ppm per Liter.

You did 4 Gallons, so 4 x 3.75 = 15 Liters
6000 / 15 = 400ppm from my quick math


This seems to somewhat verify my calculation, which gave a result of 386ppm

Isn't something crazy like 1800 ppm recommended?

I guess my question is, how is this Lucas Formula any good if you aren't feeding the plant enough?

Should I add more of this formula up to the recommended ppm for the vegetative state?

Looks like 1 tbl micro / 2 tbl bloom, PLUS 1 tsp micro/ 2 tsp bloom would put me around 1500 ppm.

for vegging and early growth, I think 400-500 ppm would be fine. If its not enough, your plants will turn pale, then that means you could up the dosage.

You are gonna kill your plants running that strong.

I never get up to 1500 ppm even in flower. 1200 or so at max for me.

400-500 as mentioned, until vigorous growth sets in, is sufficient IMO.

Excellent. Thank you very much. So then what IS the recommended PPM for each stage?

What is considered vigorous growth Bigjesse? I have a plant that is 3 weeks from seed that just got her 4th node.

All you have to do is google Lucas formula and they practically spell it out for you. Depending on whether your meter is .5 or .7 you will have different reading. If it is .5 your reading should be around 1000 for HID, 1300 for .7. For CFLs it will be a little more than half that. I'm guessing your meter is a .5. They might be using the .7 conversion on the GH website as well, I'm not sure but I know Lucas does.

Can you explain this .7 .5 thing? I've got no idea.

Yeah sure. Some meters are different. The most common 2 for TDS meters I've seen are .5 and .7. You can stick either one into the same solution and you'll get different numbers on both. Before you can really measure your PPM you need to know which one you have. Just google you meter or model number and it will say either .5 or .7.

Then go to the Lucas formula website or search for it on here and compare it to your measurement. They have the recommended PPM for both types of meters. Then just follow the recommended PPMs for CFLs are you're all set. Good luck on the grow :bigjoint:

Less is more with nutes. If you aren't sure the plant is growing vigorously then don't feed it aggressively. It's best to start slow. The plants are probably not going to be under-fertilized so keep that in mind....it is easy to overdo it though.

I would say she still sounds young for an aggressive strength. I do not currently use the Lucas Formula myself, but use the Flora Series. I have a 1000 watt MH over a 3x3 ebb and flow table with clones in hydroton. They are getting about 5 ml/gal of each Bloom, Gro, and Micro right now, fairly weak around 400 PPM's or so...and that's under a 1000 watts of HID.

Ok..seedlings I understand. But at which point would you classify a seedling is no longer a seedling, and in early veg? In that same vein, it sounds like my girl is in early veg...which point do I consider her in full veg mode? Is a plant REALLY ready by 30 days from seed? Cause my girl doesn't look like she's going to be. LOL

There are no set in stone formulas I mean look, some plant strains will be pissed with more, some need it.
