and/or to those who grow large numbers of phenos

is a plant that has lots of flavour when smoked in a joint for example hard to find? and do you have to sort through lots of flavourless and or nasty phenos to find that one that tastes good?

i have not had weed that tastes good for years and i remember in the 90's being frustrated how there was lots of really good looking and smelling weed but much of it had no flavour

and it was on rare occasion we would get weed that tasted off the chain, sometimes delicious all the way to the roach

do i need to plant lots of phenos to find good tasting weed?

Go with organic living soil & your favorite smoke.
Disclaimer.. I’m not breeder.. I just seen this on the ground & picked it up lol
From all I’ve read, organic is the “gateway to terptown” I forget who told me that.. it sounded funny.. but according to lots of others it’s not bro-science.

I don't buy into all this hunting for some mythical pheno. I'll grow half a dozen plants from seed and they all taste good. There may be slight differences but as far as needing to wade through dozens of plants to find something good I think that's just nonsense. Maybe it's because I don't grow genetics from all these pollen chuckers out there selling seeds for $20 a pop that know nothing about breeding but focus on pushing their chucks on Instagram.

No - Only strain I found tasteless are the straight Haze strains. Depends what you are after. I personally like a heavy pinene type. I agree use organic soil and nutrients - an easy one is Dr. Earth - you can grow a good crop with just that as a Nutrient "Homegrow" - I have added "Flower Girl" in full bloom. My Bill-Lee has a grape flavor. Maui-O is very tasty with Tangerine/Pine flavor

Finding the terps you're looking for shouldn't be too hard. Things like smoothness/harshness depend a lot on how it was grown/dried/cured. I personally like to hunt through as many as I can when I grow something out, mainly looking for the best high/effects.

thanks for the replies! i will soon try some weed that is the second run since seed and compare to the first run. it is low terpene btw with almost no odour fully budded but otherwise potent and consistent

i learned in a video by a scent designer/scientist(?) that some terpenes give things smell and others taste not sure how that relates

the only times i've smoked weed in joints where the smoke was like candy all the way down to the golden roach were in the 90's. i believe this type of quality still exists i hope

this could be down to having fewer connections as i got older and only buying from the cheap menu at the ocs (until i started growing yay)

My general opinion; it's all about the drying (and curing, but more specifically the drying stage) that imparts good taste into joint smoking.

You can have the bombest genetics known to man, grow the biggest stickiest healthiest plants you've ever seen, but if they aren't dried properly then the flavor won't carry over when smoking that flower.

One of the biggest mistakes newer growers make is chopping too soon. You’re cheating yourself on quality and on weight. The breeder claims of X number of weeks is not to be relied on. If it says 8-9 just figure 10-11 weeks after flipping. That’s not a hard fast rule but it’s closer to the fact than not.

Next big mistake is drying too quickly. Or in less than ideal conditions.

Thats as far as actually growing your plants. The choice of genetics is so important. And they usually do not come cheap.

my friend dried my smoke and I dried my smoke the humidity at his was 65 mine 86 most the way and his is straw mine you will get a warrent if ya open the bag nevermind smoke it

My mentor grew hydro, the same way I do, except he had decades of experience. I also got to experience alot of nor cal outdoor strains. There was much more variety from the cali stuff, and some of it was exceptionally tasty, but my mentor grew pretty tasty weed himself, but he had to do alot of hunting to get there.

From what I've read, fulvic acid, and dialed in P and K ratios will make a difference, but genes don't like.

There's something to be said for a quality cure aswell.

You could take two identical clones and grow them under two identical lights. One with salt based nutes and the other with organic nutes. Then dry and cure them identically and no one could tell the difference in flavour. Anyone that says they can is kidding themselves.

I grow in peat free store bought soil mix and with cheap liquid seaweed tomato food and home made calmag. My weed is good. It is genetics and the overall finish that makes the smoke.

Naw, some strains can be grown like shit and still taste better than some strains with super nice bag appeal and smell.

Yes, absolutely. Not all pheno's are going to have that prominent flavor that transfers to the smoke, doesnt matter how well it is grown or dried or how it looks/smells. Some strains might only taste good on the first couple hits of a joint and some you can re-light a brown ass roach and it will still taste amazing. That kind of lingering after-flavor is the hallmark of connoisseur grade cannabis, and if that is one of your main criteria for selecting keepers you are on the right path to dankness.
