Questions about par

so I had a family member come over with his par meter and we checked my setup and it showed I was getting about 1400 par at my canopy and he says I should be at 600 for vegging plants. I'm new to this and was always told more light the better and I had my lights at 20 inches from my canopy but to achieve the 600 they have to be like 3 feet and i feel that is a bad idea. Anyone with a bit more knowledge wanna let me know if he was correct?

I have 2 tents, one for vegging and the other for flowering. I tend to keep my light pretty close to the canopy to prevent over stretching during veg, 12” at the least. I do however have a lot weaker of a light in my veg tent compared to my flower tent, but this is done intentionally because my vegging plants don’t need as strong of a light. Flowering is a totally different beast all together when it comes to PAR and light distance. As my plants grow during flower, I’m constantly adjust my light to maintain 18” at all times. But this is just the way I do things and it works out ok. I purposely force the stretch at the beginning of flower so I can train a little a better, and get the sides to stick out more because it’s searching for the light. So in the beginning my light is at 24”. Once the stretch stops I drop the light to 18” and keep it there till the end. I do however use LEDS, so I can’t say this process works with CMH or HPS though.

If the meter he used is accurate, then I'd have to agree.
I've found that most of the strains I've run get a bit grumpy when ppfd is above 1000.
If the fixture you're using has enough output and you have enough headroom, raising the light and increasing the distance also decreases how quickly ppfd drops through the canopy.

Its sitting at 600 at the canopy after moving the lights up now so ill leave them there for a bit and see what happens one of my strains was starting to yellow and droop after putting in the second light so im hoping raising the lights will help solve that issue
