Go with 2 600w or 2 500w... you can manage the light better, move it accordingly over the plants. I started off with 1 600w and upgraded within the week to two lights. My plants are 10 times happier. Growing like beasts!

sorry forgot to mention I'm using viparspecta 600's ... some will sheet on them... so far they have been wonderful. GL
Funny you say viparspector that's what I'm looking into....ive moved down south need something that produces less heat that cfl mh hps budget for lights is going to be around 250 300 pushing it I know 600 watts cfl is not the best but I know 3 plants 12 week turnaround I was happy with quality and quantity

The viparspectra 600 light sold on ebay only draws about 275 watts at wall. It's definitely not a 600 watt light. It will grow, and 2 of them will indeed give you better canopy coverage. Just understand exactly what you're getting, because they won't produce like a true 600 watt led fixture.

These are day 53 under 2 "600"w viparspectra. They do, in fact, grow cannabis!
Is that a strain that naturally fox tails? Or is your room simply too hot. Also to the op LEDs work well some better than others I run more than 6000 watts of led some burple lights some I've built. The cob lights are going to better than anything an building them will result in something nice for you. @srichard722

This ww x bb pheno is prone to foxtailing. Add that with me running out of vertical space ( buds ~7-8" from lights) and i get that. Lol

Looks like ill be going with 200watt timber....can any one share their experience with timber lights? Maybe pics of a full cycle with them? Compared to 600 watt cfl what can I expect will a set of t5 veg lights be better or will I be better off using cob 3500k?

The timber fixtures won't vary much from other cob builds of similar design. Search up some grow journals of 200 watt cob builds.

There are several ways to get to a 200 watt light as well. What is the size of your grow area? And when you refer to "600 watts of cfl", is that true watts or six 100 watt equivalent? 200 watts of modern cob technology will absolutely crush a handful of standard cfl bulbs.

3x3 grow tent for 2 maybe 3 plants I was using 2 300watt cfl lights now would i be better off using my t5 fixure for veg or just use cob 3500k for full cycle? I'm on a budget need new lights new exhaust pots soil nutes Fan...basicly starting over only thing I got is 3x3 tent t5 cfls and hoods but I now live in the South and need to watch my heat better my t5 is just a 2bulb 2foot fixture

You will have several options in a 3x3. I don't use a square area, so it's kinda hard to give you first hand knowledge. Principles are pretty much the same though. The general target is to get to an even spread of about 50 watts per sq/ft. Plenty of people kicking ass with a little less though.

How handy are you? Capable of sourcing some parts, cutting some aluminum, bolting shit together, and terminating some wire? You can save a lot of money this way! If not, don't sweat it. There are still quite a few kits and assembled lights out there.

I think to give you the most flexibility in a 3x3 I would look at building two 200- 250 bars. 3500k would do fine start to finish. But you could always veg under your t5 if you wanted. A lot of people use the bars to be modular. Budget allows them to build one, they complete grow with it. For the next grow they add another. If then say you expand to a 4x4, add another bar or 2. If you ever want to upgrade or change anything, you can do it a bar at a time.

@srichard722 if your planning on using two areas , one flower one veg then keep your t5s for veg, if you just veg and flower in the same space then you can use 3500k cobs for both with great results.
I'm not against using viparspectra but folk need to understand a lot of cheap LED are not more efficient than HPS so watt for watt HPS is the better option. Cheap LED put out plenty of heat, its just not felt the same way due to lack of IR and its dispersed via fans and heat sinks so they think they are cooler. They are only cooler when less wattage is used. 600w of cfl is lots of heat. If your going to go with COBs then 300-400w of COBs will give you lots of light and reduce your wattage and your heat in turn. You want efficiency so timber and other advertisers on here are the way to go.
If you want to see some good COB grows from start to finish there are lots on here but may be easier to check out growmau5 on youtube.

@Tim Fox do you think that the timber kits are a better value than say the vero 29 kit from rapid?

Having built a few lights, I feel like the frame is the most time consuming part. The vero 29 kit from rapid is $220 with options to run at 1400ma or 2100ma, and upgrading to se would make it solderless. After the upgrade, adding fan, and power supply for fan, op could grab 2 of these for about the $500 he has to spend. Personally, I'd like to see the cobs spread out a bit more. But putting 500 watts in a 3x3 for $1/watt is a damn good deal.

Just saying I'm going with the timber 200watt vero29 with the frame work I'll use em for full cycle except seedlings for the first week or two I'll use t5 than place them under the cob....im handy with tools but very little free time that's why Imma just buy the kit with frame work....ill do two plants my first run going to do a quick first run 3 week veg with some BlackBerry haze seeds I have from a buddy (not feminized) during that grow I'll order some fems....
