I was cleaning up the bottom of my plant and ended up with a couple of cuttings that I was thinking about trying to root... I wasnt planning on it but figure what the hell... why not?? Is there one chance in 20 that they'll root just by placing them in water??? or is the rooting hormone a must?

Yes water alone will work. Takes a while just soak till ya see a root.

You could put them in soil if you have some rooting compound which will help speed it along, but leaving them in water (changing the water every couple days) for a week or so will do it just as well - just keep them out of strong light.

ok nice.... I have them under "Moms" leaves.... so they're just getting some residual light peeking through... ty everyone!

I just got some cuts that someone had been soaking in water and some other stuff I'm not even sure wtf it was. I wanted the cuts fresh but wasn't able to get to them in time, I got them in horrible shape without even the sign of a bump, recut them and put them in the diy aero cloner and about a week later they have 1/2 inch roots just popping out. I do like aero cloning and a diy cloner cost very little to build.
