new roots will follow the pathways of old roots, leave em.....the old roots have done all the hard work making drainage and air passageways....

it is a "weed" after all :) and most weeds exist because they have big bad root systems usually....so they should have no problem punching through old root mass even after a week or so....

@Pattahabi To break down my used soil balls i will usually make an em inoculant from rice wash and some sort of food source for the microbes. I spray the intact rootballs after placing them in a container with the lid cracked. The stems will pull right out when its done. The soil you get when its ready is unbeilevabley rich ! Much cheaper than buying a bottle of em- 1

This would definitely be a great organic way to speed up decomposition. Lactobacillus cultures work well as an EM-1 substitute. I bought a bottle of EM-1 to make bokashi bran, so I'm using the left over just because I have it. I leave the root balls in the soil, and let the soil break it down as to not disturb the fungal networks.

Organics FTW!

Tried Bokashi quite a while ago, and due to space/time requirements, I've held off messing around with it any further. I'm certainly no expert, but I've been through the process, so if you have questions shout!
