R.I.P. to my mother - She is in a better place...

So this brings me to the next conundrum...
Is it better to keep one mom and cut from it continuously or is it better to cut and start a new generation?
Cuts are supposedly an exact copy and I have also heard that the genetics can be diluted down the generation line.
The other end of the spectrum is that some say it is bad to cut from one single mom over and over again..

Whats everyone's take?

This is the reason you recycle through mothers every 3 months or so!

All they really do is get bigger and bigger which = more and more work!

What will really activate certain genetics is an environmental change which will produce a different Blue Dream than what was started with... And at this it is not really a change in genetics in the sense of a new strain but it is more or less a genetic that is triggered by the environmental change. Many folks don't know this is where breeders get their different traits to show (ie -mess with the light schedule).

It depends on how healthy the plant is which the cuttings came from. If the mother is properly maintained and healthy and has high auxin levels, then there will be no degradation of genetic material. Clones are like carbon copies if done properly the genetics message will have no problem being read and replicated, however the more stressed the mother and then the clones are, the more possibility genetic drift. In addition some genetics remain more stable than others When cloned and those are the phenotyoes chosen for clone only strains in most cases. Once you get a real clone only it has most likely tried the test of stress for Genetic drift. Mothers of any strain shouldnbe kept no longer than 1 year because genetic copying degrdes in the plant because cannabis is an annual. Healthy clones from healthy mothers will make new healthy mothers.

Would like to add...

Indoor cannabis plants have no sense of the season...

A good strain will stay strong as long as you maintain it!

I have see a mother over 4 years old still producing clones today...
Where I got my Blue Dream...

Pruning and cloning are a growers best skills without them watering and harvesting would not be the same!

Like golf - Its all about the short game! Not always how you get there but how you get in!

I agree, I have seen mothers that were 4-5 years old still producing great clones. I could never keep a mother that long. They take up too much room.

I kept a mother for a year. When i moved she came but the clones became harder to root but the plant that did take never showed any drift as in quality, but clones of clones were even harder to take. I still miss my mom a lot ! LOL

The best way to keep A mother in check Is always take clone from the tops never bottoms. I ascribe to the school of thought that the best clones are from the tops because the growing tips on the top of the plant contain the highest hormone levels, other disagree and say bottom clones are better. Some say to take from the bottom because the tops will yield the best flowers but it you are growing a mother it is for clones not flowers.

Go and watch a tour of a cloning facility in Europe by Jorge Cervantes. They discuss how long they keep mothers and what is optimal for production cloning. You can also study the difference between annuals and perennials and learn more about plant biology in general.

I don't keep mothers but I do top my plants and take clones from my tops. It's recommended to take from the bottom because they are supposed to root faster due to the less nitrogen if I remember correctly.

R.I.P.....

Sure glad it was your plant and not your natural mother. Though losing either is tough. At least you have the fond memories.

Damn.

our moms are 1/3 that size and we are cloning them constantly. We take tniy clones and now go right into Rooters as we stopped using Rockwool. Just seems to work better for us.

That being said we keep the moms for about 8 months then flower them. Not sure why, we just do and start a new mom.

Agreed i'd rather do rapid rooters and jiffy pellets all day before doing any more in rockwool. Seems to work better for me too. ^^^^^^^^

never tried the pellets. i do wish the Rooters were a bit cheaper though. been going through about 200 month
I love rapid rooters and yea they can get pricey. I just recently started to use these pellets, because i use to think they were ghetto and didn't work that well. That goes to show never knock it before you try it.. These pellets really work well only lost one of 30 clones, and the best part there .12 cents a piece. That would be .12 x 200 = 24 a lot in saving's plus you would probably get them cheaper in bulk.

Rock wool is cheaper but cleanliness is the key to success when using it.

That AND I feel like the rockwool really needs to be precharged for a day in a rooting solution. then I hate that you can't really use the damn hole. why do they make that fuckin hole so damn big!
