I finally made it back to a Rainbow Gathering. I havent been since the early 80s and so much has changed. They used to be all about world peace and good drugs.

This weekend was full of mean gestures, hate and alcohol. The drum circles and hippies were nice but there just too many people there with the wrong idea of how things should go.

Have any of you ever been to one of these? They travel the country and pray for world peace and freedom

Yes i've seen through a few, the Rainbow's at least try - got a bit expensive too.

For one thing I didnt even know that there was a fire. There is no reason for you to act like this. I was asking a question because they camped right in my back yard and it had been years since i had even thought of the rainbow people. Enjoy your smoke.

Passive aggressive? You shouldn't be so defensive. Grow some skin and leave your theatrics at the door.

old thread but I was searching for gathering threads. I have gone to 12 gatherings over the last 15 years and it has changed much. they force the "A" (alcohol camp) to be right in the path to get to the actual gathering every year, this makes it so nearly everyone has to walk by and get harassed and see the idiocy of the drunks, lots of rumors that the feds make this happen for bad publicity but who knows. it is not a very pleasant first impression for returning family or new family coming to see what the gathering is all about, and it deters many locals from entering into the real gathering. I have also found that the "street kids" as we call them at the gathering are very rude and have an immense sense of self entitlement. they think that they should have a right to your tobacco, or your herb or your whatever. they take advantage of the rainbows kindness and generally cause problems in the outlying towns around the gathering, or on the way in. this is of course not the case with all of them, but there is a significant number in my opinion.

If you decide to attend one, the west coast gatherings are the better typically, usually better water source and more spread out, more civilized forest service employees. I wouldn't recommend to use the welcomehere.org site, the federal task force that is permanently assigned to track, monitor and deal with the rainbow family uses the welcomehere site to distribute false information and have set up false seed camps to entrap folks trying to get to the rainbow gathering. the most reliable site for the rainbow gathering is www.welcomehome.org It is back in montana next year, hope to see ya there! :)

The Rainbow Gatherings are environmental disasters. We had a few gatherings around here and every time they left a terrible mess behind. Trash, feces and hundreds of gallon jugs filled with urine, destroyed habitat, and discarded drug paraphenalia. It was a nightmare. I was a volunteer at one of the clean ups. I wanted to vomit the entire time. All the Rainbow Gathering accomplishes is local resentment and participants getting high.

I have stayed to help cleanup, it may take months but the job gets done, there are many, many letters from the forest service stating that the cleanup has in most cases left the sites in better shape than they were found in. erosion gets dealt with, trails get covered, bridges dismantled, natural plants get reseeded. your blanket statement offends me deeply, the gathering accomplishes alot, I'm sorry you had a bad experience with folks "claiming" to be rainbow family but you shouldn't hold an entire group with millions of members responsible for the idiocy of a few; otherwise I could call everyone on this board an idiot pothead, but we know that's not true

The concept is beautiful. The application of the concept doesn't take human nature into account. Maybe in small groups it might be a good idea but that many people in one place without bathroom facilities or washrooms? Oh. My. Fucking. Hell. DreadHippy can get offended all he wants. He even stated that it took MONTHS to clean up after a gathering. MONTHS. And in places with fragile habitats like New Mexico take much longer to recover (if they ever do). If they want a get-together then rent a park or an auditorium. Instead they pick some of the most pristine habitat (for it's spiritual value) and then proceed to trash it. No love lost here for the Rainbow Gatherings.
