Ralh3 makes the switch from 600w hps to 23 3590s

So Ive been growing for a few years under a 600w hps or two for flower and then a crap led panel i made the mistake of buying for veg.

Ive been a coco/perlite guy for most of the last few years as well. After a combination of factors Im sick of HPS and intrigued by cob builds like mau5 and such Ive decided to shake things up and invest time and money.

Switching to NFT pipes and 3590 cobs. However unlike most of you here who love the effiecient side i will be pounding out the higher end.

I have pulled the trigger and spent a ton of money and my materials have been shipped out. En route to me are
14 CXB3590 3500K CB
9 CXB3590 5000K CB
4 HLG 240-1750 drivers
1 HLG 240-1050
23 Ideal cob holders and attachment
23 LEDIL Angelina reflectors
9 20 Inch 5.886 profile heatsinks
2 15 in same profile
8 Cpu fans

A bunch of connectors and wire and such. Ill update as I get time (at work on lunch atm)

I plan on driving 16 3590s at 1750 over about a 3x5 area or so and then the other 7 will be for veg at 1050.

I know the feeling, the first thousand dollars is always the hardest to part with haha. And diy cxbs arent on the gentle side of wallet slapping... Not to mention 210 inches of 5.886 heatsink... Ufda

I think you will end up being very happy with the results, but a few things I notice..

9 3590s will require more voltage than the 240-1050 can deliver. You can run 7 of them on the 240.

16 3590s at 1.75 amps is a ton of light in a 3x5. 12 of them would still be fairly extreme. If you've already ordered, maybe expand your flowering area, or you will need a dimmer and likely be unable to run all 16 at full power.

Apreciate you stopping in Rahz, that was actually just a typo. For veg it will be 3 bars (the 2 15 in heatsink bars around a 20) 2 5000k cobs on each 15 and 1 500k in the middle of two 3500k's on the 20.



You are correct that 9 wouldnt fit. The other 4 will go in the flower bars with the remaining 12 3500k's


The thing about the size is that the whole setup will be kinda modular and can adjust to whatever i want for that week.

Yes it will be a veritable ton of light (unless im nuts it would approach 1500-1800 ppfd pretty easy) But im not concerned there as NFT doesnt really give a crap about increased water uptake and Im scrapping the HIDs to get even more intense so im gonna see how much is too much then if need i guess i can spread easily too like 4x5 or 5x5 or maybe add the veg stuff back in and make it 6x

1500PPFD would be about max I'm thinking. 12 cobs would be about 1200PPFD, assuming 10% losses.

It's gonna rock the shit outta your space homie. The way your building with just 2-3 per heatsink, just go for it. Don't trip on PPFD. Youll kick some major ass blasting em during flower. I would dim at first though and increase daily in increments to full in the first 2 week period just a little turn more each day just to adjust from 7 to 16.

All are the current top bins correct, All 3500s are CD, 5000ks are all the 13k lumen DBs.

It will be an awesome setup!
I can see you have good results with hps!...don't feed like for hps...!
I vegg without any liquid nutes...only bagsoil/coco/ewc and a few watering with molasses...no more...and it is green very green...I just add some organic grow 2/3 before and during stretch!
And for bloom...I love it...the same but with a different bagsoil and batguano bloom (and a bit of wheat flour worm guano) results were wonderful...and what a great taste...idk if it is batguano or molasses or both but the taste is incredibly sweet...so imo organic + cob is the perfect match!

Contemplating RDWC instead of NFT now as the root volume could be increased tremendously, and lets face it me and my wifey smoke entirely too much reefer to skimp on root size

I do rcdwc.


And this is the way I do it on my dad's tomatoes rcdwc I built for him.

The pic is older when i was using each side on its own pump. But now its in just one 320gal/hr one. It is connected to a y that elbows out both ways to the 3 buckets on each side of it through 1/2" tubing to fill the buckets and as gravity works, the return lines bring the water back to the reservoir via 3/4".
Let me know if you have questions. It's the best method in my opinion just look at this stem!

Whoa... I just use 5 gal buckets. If you want bigger space, buy 7 galls. But 18 gal tubs, DO NOT hold their structure when filled with water over time. Also, you'd need about 14-15 gals to be under the net pot and that's a lot of water. With 5 gals, I need 3 gals per, with 7 it'd be 5-5.5 much more manageable. Your entire bucket can turn into a root ball towards the end. Still works fine. Also, the BLACK bucket keeps out light which is EXTREMELY important.

Lord, I use lp aero with 6 inch tubes and 3" net pots. works great for me. 25 plants in 24 sqft
