RDWC Bucket sizes

Hey,

So, I'm in the middle of my first grow using two 5 gallon bubble buckets and I'm currently planning out my switch to RDWC for my second grow. I'm going to keep it simple and stay with two grow sites and a res.

I'll be using square buckets to make the build easier, but am unsure about the sizes.

I'm currently looking at using these 4-gallon buckets from Uline for my two grow sites:
https://www.uline.ca/Product/Detail/S-13650BL/Pails/Square-Pail-4-Gallon-Black?model=S-13650BL&RootChecked=yes

and this 8-gallon bucket from EZ Stor for my res:
https://agron.io/products/ez-store-container-buckets-8-and-13-gallon-and-lid_1

part of me thinks the 4-gallon buckets are too small and that I should just use 3 of the EZ Stor 8-gallon buckets. Thoughts?

Also, has anyone used an ice-probe for cooling? Would it work ok for a small system like this? I only need to drop temps about 4F.

When I began running RDWC 3 years ago, I used 5 gal buckets plumbed to a central rez. Constantly fought roots clogging returns and just filling the buckets with root mass. Switched to 17gal HDX totes w/6" netlids and it's no comparison. Bottom line-if you have the space, go with bigger.

I'm thinking of going with 2" tubing for my return, do you think this is big enough or should I go to 3"?

As above says the bigger the better really.. I went with 62ltr containers which suited me fine with 2in returns.. again like above says the bigger the containers the more nutrient solution you will have and this makes thing much more stable..

Check out the current culture 3" bulkheads, super easy to install/remove and not a single leak, Use lots of pvc glue when you are gluing your schedule 40 3" pvc to them. If you have a menards in your area check out the menards brand 10 gal trash cans they sell, work very nicely and lots of room, hdx containers work well also.
