Re-wiring for cool tube setup

Hey guys I just got my new ipower cool tube that is set up for their ballast, and was wondering if I could re-wire my HTG supply ballast into the new ipower cord? Here's a pic to show what I mean, can I snip the wires, and re wire them to match up. I'm sure there is only 3 wires under the insulation, the ground, negative and the hot wire.

Any help is much appreciated!!image.jpgimage.jpg

Well no one has replied yet so I will say my bit.

That looks like a magnetic ballast, if so and it's not a digital ballast, then yeah go ahead and rewire that cool tube to the ballast. It will work fine. The only time you would have a problem is if the ballast was digital. The join in the wires would emit RF interference which 'could' get you busted. Most digital ballasts are RFI shielded, so are the wires. And cutting and joining the wires breaks that shield.

But your ballast looks like it has a transformer on it meaning its a magnetic ballast and interference ain't a problem for you.

Just make sure that the wiring is coloured correctly in both the ballast and the cooltube. The only wire you truly gotta make sure is correct is the earth/ground wire. After the ballast the neutral and live wires do not matter which way they are wired up due to AC current.

BUT remember electricity is DANGEROUS! Never leave live wires bare, never use cello tape or duct tape for joins. Always use insulation tape, solder the joints if possible for a more secure join.

It's a magnetic ballast so I'm gonna give it a go! I'm going to use twist caps for the joint and electrical tape to secure everything. Thanks for the info on the digital ballasts too! I didn't know even the wires could emit RFs. Would the ground be the biggest wire? I'm no pro with electrical but I'm sure I can figure out!

Right, I just blinded myself but I am sure that you will have a ground wire also as I do have on my cooltube. The easiest way to determine what the ground is, is to look on the cooltube side of things. Look at the wires that enter the tube and see what colours they are. Mines is a yellow wire for ground, the other 2 I do not have a clue as I was almost blinded by trying to look haha

The ground wire is the single one that is attached to the metal part of the cooltube. The other 2 wires go to the lamp holder inside the cooltube. They should have different colours for safety reasons, also making things easier to figure out.

You should be fine using them twist on wiring connectors, I have never used them but have seen them and they seem sufficient as long as you use the correct size and leave no bare wire showing which could cause fire or electric shock.

And about the digi ballasts, yeah any wire can emit RF. You know a simple length of wire can be used as an antenna that is capable of transmitting signals right around the world.

For wire to not emit RF it must also be shielded. I believe my ballast is RF shielded (Lumatek) but the cooltube wire is NOT. However the problems that arise that could get you busted is all related to cable internet, we do not have cable in my area so that is a bit of a relief. I have tested my setup with a regular AM radio to check if there is any noise on what would normally be a clear radio station. There is very little interference coming from my setup so all is good.
