I'm sure this is a dumb question that's probably been asked.. What does " Top Bin " mean ? Is it like Top shelf liquor or weed and means most expensive and best quality?

I recently discovered that heatsink USA is not far from my home and my brother in law ( doesn't smoke) agreed to help me build a light.

To the rest of you fellows over the heat/temperature war: :finger: Why argue over semantics? :fire: The aim is to be able to understand and predict how to manage waste heat (temperature, whatever) from the LED array in the grow room. Anyone who has practical experience with this problem, please share your findings and anecdotes!

....... a more efficient light source lets you use less overall power displacement in order to achieve the same photon density.......
Now for the $64,000.00 question: Strictly in terms of your (anyone!) experience, how would you compare LED (white cobs cxa/cxb) and HPS, in terms of brightness/usable light output/plant growth response?

Do LED's really measure up to where 600W of LED could replace 1000W of HPS, or even better?

"I want to believe"

I'm hoping to hear any of your valuable practical experiences on this matter

I'm planning on doing this build but I definitely don't have a heat problem, infact I'm growing on a covered deck - so it will be cold. (Seattle, WA)

Would you suggest I run 4 cobs on a 1400ma? Energy is cheap here, $0.08c/KWH!

Would I need 36v or 72v to do that?

I'd like to passively heat them if I can avoid dragging a heater into my tent, all the better.

since your growing outside and winter is coming, suggest you hang one vertical hps in the center of your tent.

oops forgot, plus dehumidifier for extra heat.

I use both. From what I am seeing however under my Qty 4 125w powered Vero 29s.. they certainly are performing up to par with my 1000 watt HPS using a Magnum XXXL 6" hood but with a smaller footprint.

When I moved the two units closer together however,, and raised the lights slightly.. the plants that benefited from the overlap of receiving both the HPS lighting and the Vero 29 4000K lighting.. are the plants that actually look the best in my room.

Ideally I would like to have Qty 8 of the Vero 29 4000k COB chips in my flower area running at 125w ea and another 1000w ballast,. increasing my floor space from the 25sqft coverage I have now to about double that.. I think the yields that could be pulled off would be ginormous. The plants would really be happy by receiving what Clarke referred to in his infamous "Marijuana Botany Book" as a fully realized cannabinoid profile by the grower providing such a wide spectrum of usable light for photosynthesis.

HPS isn't an option because of noise, it's a very quiet building

But it's like an entirely covered porch if that makes sense: roof, thick walls, double paned windows, and it stays pretty good temperature compared to just outside temp. I could easily insulate the tent I think

what noise ? probably only need a 400watt to supplement your cobs.
I'm new at this - don't they make a constant audible humming noise + need fans to operate at an audible level as well? Neighbors are a top concern.

I'm not even sure how that would fit in the tent with a 10"x24" cob heat sink (which is already ordered)

the hps drops in the center as a vertical. Ideally two cob light one on each side of the hps.

and no the noise isn't much, just get a good digital ballast, your "covered porch" has plenty of sound insulation. a dehumidifier is noisier, but essential.

so, what, about 3x3 under those 500W of Vero's?

How high do you mount them?

I'm getting a 4 x 4 footprint at what im presently doing, which is keeping the light mounted about 20" above the canopy. This lines up with what the manufacturer of my light stated in the specifications however they recommended a distance of 16" which I tried but my younger Veg plants at the time really didn't like that.

The fixture I'm using is the Optic Lighting 500 watt Vero Led that cost about $900.

I plan on buying another light once the company finishes whatever business transition phase it is going through, as they were recently purchased by another company.

Very happy with the performance. I'm glad I went with the 4000k. It was a tough call.

Top bin means how efficient they are and no you won't pay more when buying from Kingbrite

I made a little pic for you, the letters CD,DD and so on are the BIN's (groupings), The numbers next to them show how much light they put out at the temp listed. When they are running cooler they are more efficient as the chart shows.

CRI is how easy it is to distinguish colors under the light which for growing doesnt really matter.
Sunlight has a CRI of 100, so higher the CRI the easier it is to distinguish colors

cant put this as a link, but its a little more in depth, its about xml's but same concept.

I dont know how experienced you are with this type of thing, but for safety sake.... Id recommend doing a good amount of reading on here and get a good understanding before you start playing with high voltage drivers that can kill you easily, also make sure not to wire up a cob backwards (easy mistake when stoned) ....Ive heard they explode (never tested it out lol)
