Reasons for slow growth? (pics - do these look OK)

Information
* Bag seed (the weed sucked, but I don't smoke anymore. I'm growing the plant for aesthetics)

* They are about 4-5 days old from germination

* Humidity is around 50%

* Temp is 75-80F

* they are about 20 inches from a 600w MH for 18 hours, and 1" away from 3 24w CFLs for 6 hours

* Fan is blowing on them

* Soil is half new, half recycled from old plants. It's all just miracle gro

* I was overwatering in the beginning, but I stopped, now about 1/2 of the top of the cups (transparent cups) is dry.

* No extra nutes added, but soil contains these little balls of nutes that might still contain some nutes

Problem.. VERY slow growth! I see new shoots and all, but it's way too slow compared to most of the grow journals I see on this board. It might be genetics, but let's rule out other things first.

If you look at the right-most pic on the top row, the edges of the leaves is turning yellow.. ??

Also, the stems are very weak. I grow many other (legal) plants.. I don't think they're supposed to be this weak? Hopefully with the fan on, they'll thicken.

Also, I plan to switch to hydro (DWC) when the plants are hardened. Is going from soil to water a problem? I'll be using a DIY DWC w/ net pots and hydroton.

Thanks!!

They look ok, you may want to add a tiny bit of nutes next water and everyother from then on. Just got schooled on clear cups they are bad for roots and give alge, you may want to tape your cups like i had to.

you should raise ya light a little more coz its recommended you keep a 250 watt mh light 24" above seedlings for the first week or so and yours is a 600 watter plus you should mist ya seedlings several times a day and clear cups aint good coz roots like darkness.

always remember to PH the water... :) almost 50% of the problems people have with thier plants are due to PH.... the other 50% is from simple things such as over watering... too much nutes...

Other than that,., its really hard to kill these plants...( heat, cold, etc)

Well all sounds fine to me. And all looks fine. So just keep doin what your doin and see what happens. They might hit puberty!!!

That soil could be a problem for you having nutes already added. Alot of people's plants get nute burn from using that crappy miracle grow.

Oh and the little round leaves are turning yellow because they are only the seed meat. They are only suppose to live long enough for the plant to begin making its own food.

OK guys, thanks for all the tips!

I'll duct tape the sides of the cups and move the lights further away, and also begin misting them daily.

Being cheap might have worked in my favor here, in regards to the nute burn from miracle gro. The soil is old compost that I had in my house plants, so a lot of nutes were likely leached off.

What should I pH adjust the water to?

I'm using tap water, but don't have any pH up/down solutions, nor even a pH meter. What I can do is check online for my city's water info (pH), then adjust it blindly using hydrated lime as pH up, and lime/lemon as a pH up, or a crushed up vitamin C tablet. Should work if I get the numbers right.

and, I'll admit I haven't been doing my homework. What kinds of nutes should I use? Thanks!

OK friend IMHO:
DWC - would be cool, but you will need to sex them before you put them in there if they're going to be in the same container or the M/F roots will be all tangled! If I were you I would stick with soil then take clones from your females (clip em from your plant, cut the buds off and keep them on an 18/6 light schedule and do a nice dwc setup with all females.) or you can watch these youtube this "I Grow Chronic! 6of9 (Marijuana hydroponic grow room setup)" sexing/cloning advice starts at 1:15.
NUTES - I wouldn't give them any nuts for at least a month. The seedlings have enough food in them for two weeks, then you have all the food in the soil
WATER - They are little delicate babies. If you stress them, you will get more males. marijuana loves to be on a schedule. So, I would just spray the tops of the soil 1-2 times a day keeping the top layer wet, but don't let the soil get too wet, just lift the cups to see how much water is in there. Your roots need air as much as they do water.
LIGHT - Move that light up to 3-4 feet above em in the seedling stage. The amount of light seedlings need is very low. You're probably stressing them. I don't know how much you know - but they don't need a lot of light in the seedling stage. The amount of light they need is proportional to their growing stage basically. When they hit the veg stage, they can grow an inch or more a day, so they will need more light. When they are budding, they will need more than that. Be gentle with little babies. They're so cute.

Thanks for the reply, marcnh! I've taken your considerations into account, have duct taped around the plastic cups and moved them to about 3 feet from the MH.

I have some powder rooting hormone, would it be wise to put some in next time I water them to speed up root growth?

I believe the rooting hormone you are referring to is for cloning. I would just spray the tops and keep those babies moist but not wet, but let them dry out a little between sprays making sure the roots are getting plenty of air. Don't really worry about under watering.
I forgot to mention the ph issue - it's better to get a meter, ph up, and ph down, but an alternative is to let the water sit out overnight in an open container and the chlorine will evaporate. Don't take tap water and put it directly on your plants. Or get a water filter.
If you want rooting hormone, you can get "superthrive" at walfart or home depot. Just use one drop for each 8 oz of water - I wouldn't give them more than one dose a week though.
