Rebranding Marijuana?

Anyone feel like the use of "420" in the legal and social campaign to legitimize marijuana is counterproductive? We have house bills with 420, Dr's offices with 420 in there name, lawyers....etc. 420 is synonymous with GangBangers, dreadlocks, and the socially undesirables. I am not claiming these are undesirables, I am just stating the general public opinion about the people associated with "420". Wouldn't we be doing everyone (recreational and MMJ users) a favor by rebranding marijuana and de-stigmatizing this herb?

We all want and have the right to smoke, be it for the sake of just getting HIGH or medicating, and I think a rebranding is what we need in the country.

Just my opinion though.

I think "420" is about as bland and non-descriptive of a term as you can get.

It's not the words, it's the attitudes: the words mean nothing without context.

The "undesirables" are going to claim whatever words becomes popular anyway, and then the rest of society is going to shift their attitudes towards those words in kind.

What we need to do is campaign to change the perspective of "420," which is exactly what the medical and mainstream community is doing, not find some other word to substitute.

the fact that us stoners get 2 more 4:20's every day is just icing on the cake
but we celebrate that date for a reason, and its not cause kids smoking after school

Yes but 420 has plenty of context. 420 to most is very descriptive and I think we should put a new face on the re-legalization/decriminalization movement. Every time I see 420 in the name of a Dr's office my level of respect for that practice drops and I am a pro MMJ guy. I know other that feel the same way.

I just think we need a new campaign and maybe one that's a little more sophisticated and political savvy. Just a thought.

I know where it comes from. I was only making an observation about how the voting public see's it. This is not my view as I stated.

Actually, there was a serious attempt to track down the first use of the words "420" synonymous with smoking weed.

Take a look at this:

FYI people have also said this about the word (Marijuana)
there' some smoker the hate that word
because of it's assocation. with spanish, and mexico, and cartels . and so on
these people try to say only call it canibus
i don't realy think that much into it
i just call it weed
to me the term weed makes it sound safe and harmless
which it is
i love to here people say "it's just a weed "
as soon as i hear that word , i tink of the earth and soil and growth
and most of all produce
the other names for it dont give me that feeling
except for the word "pot" that also makes mr think of produce ...
.....LOL

The story is about kids meeting up at a statue, in front of a school or some place, everyday at 4;20 to go look for a lost marijuana field. They never found it but habitually continued to meet up after they gave up on the search. The story has been verified buy journalist and they actually interviewed the guys the story came from.

4, 2, and zero are just numbers. There is nothing descriptive about numbers, unless you're counting something.

Why do you lose respect for other people who use popular nomenclature?

I think you need to forgive yourself for engaging in a practice that "undesirables" also engage in. Or maybe you need to forgive the "undesirables" for using a word that professionals are proud to use themselves!

Again, the problem is not the word, the problem is the attitude.

I am speaking of the views of the voting public not my personal view.
Yes number are only numbers but words and number have meanings, and 420 has meaning and it is not a professional one.

I am talking about public opinion and the advancement of the movement. I as a professional will choose to not use 420 in my practice but I will be an advocate.
We don't live in a bubble and we have to take in to consideration the stigma and meaning of terms, words and yes, even numbers if we are to eventually legalize marijuana.

I don't need to forgive anyone LOL, WTF. I think you are reading into this a little much.

420 is international, the "undesirables" you described are a local phenomena.

These numbers only have relevance because we, the voting public, have assigned relevance to those numbers.

If we are to advance anything, we need to advance people's attitudes towards the drug. It doesn't matter what you call it, the pre-conceived notions surrounding the drug will be made apparent and connections will be made no matter what words you use.

It seems to me that what you're abdicating is attempting to distance the cause of medical marijuana from the culture of "undesirables."

The medical community is only now beginning to recognize what these other cultures have already known. Do you think you're so different from these "undesirable" cultures simply because you're a medical patient?

If not it sounds good. Thats like a little less than 2 oz.. Thats a hell of a pinch.
that just 1 oz on the nose
if you weighing the oz's @ 28
still hell of a pinch
but i can see that happing back inthe day before everyone had pocket scales
for me 420 is just waaay to close to the weight of a lb
and back then if i had to be the 1 to bring back a few lb's for anyone i'ma want at least an oz from each lb's
hell thats my rule now

Are taking this personal? You are missing my point and I can't tell if you doing it intentionally.
Your insistance on quoting the word "undesirables" says you might not be hearing me because you don't understand the point.
And as I said before I am not the ones who sees them as "undersirables" but you ignore this.

420 is 1.90 oz. short of a pound. Isn't it? Is my math wrong.
