RedEye's Closet Grow

This is my 2nd attempt at a successful grow op. I had originally started with one fem. himalaya blue diesel seed from ShortStuff seeds. Sadly I ruined that one, so I decided to stick with a bag seed for now.

My setup consists of an old weight bench, tilted on it's side to create a small and easily controllable area for my plant. Cracks and holes are sealed off with cardboard and duct tape and for now I have 2 sheets draped over the front until I make more solid door for it. I fixed a 12V PC fan and switch to the top of my little "tent" and plan on making a DIY carbon filter to tape onto that. As for my medium, I am using a mixture of Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil and perlite in a 3 gal. pot. I will be using FF's Grow Big and Big Bloom nutrients as the grow progresses. Lights used are (4) 23W CFLs, 2 of which are 2700K and the other 2 are 6000K.

I am currently starting my 5th week of growing, just started with the Grow Big nutes, and just looking for any insight that I can get to help me out. Any form of criticism is appreciated.

Note: In the 1st picture, you should see a little bit of yellowing on the tips of some of the lower leaves, but not much. That has been there even before I started with nutes. Is it something I should be worried about?

I am not a fan of those little CFLs. I have had little boxes like that but I always get like a 100w MH on top with 2 68watt 2700 cfls on the sides. Then you get broader spectrum and more coverage. You might be fine in veg. The yellowing is probably lack of light penetration combined with slow growth.

End of week 4(typo in my last post; it should say week 4 not 5) update:
Earlier this week I decided to move into the flowering stage after just over a month of Veg. I have made some changes to my set up throughout this week. I started off by setting up a DIY CO2 generator using a pop bottle filled half way with warm water, yeast, and sugar. It seems to have made some major changes in the growth process. I also found a nice 70W HPS lamp that was slightly modified so that it could have a 3 prong cord on it. 2 of the CFLs were replaced by this lamp, and 2 2700K CFLs were kept so as to get more light to the bottom/side of the plant. Also I swapped out my alum. foil and bed sheets for some Panda Plastic.

Overall, the plant is now at about 7 1/2" tall, with a leaf span of 9", and is starting on it's 10th node. In some of the newer pictures you might see a little burn spot(one of the CFLs fell and got way to close to the plant) but other than that it seems to be fairly healthy.

I do notice that for the past week, all of the leaf tips seem to be curling under just slightly. Any thoughts on that? Thanks again for any help.

for the poster that dissed the cfl's, do people not realize grows r done all the time with them successfully?

anyone one GORGEOUS indica u got there, really. great job. tight internodes, can u say CFL! looking great...slight curling might? be from needing more water. watering schedule has to be modified once flowering, they can drink it up like nobody's business at this time. all i can go by is what u say because in the pics i see nothing but beauty.....

Since putting in this new HPS light it seems like the plant doesn't stand up as much as it used to. Does the light seem like it's at a good distance from the canopy? Or could it just be from a lack of water?

Another quick update:
I was just checking over my plant after watering it and noticed what I think might be pistils. The plant has been in flowering for only 5 days so I am not sure if it is in fact a pistil.
I got the best picture I could so if anyone could confirm this for me that would be great.

they probably dont stand up as much because they have no need to seek out the light since u r using a much stronger light. keep it at least 5 inches away from the tops at all times & u will be fine. It seems like u r doing that.

Day 42 update:
She is in her tenth day of flowering and currently stands 1 foot tall. More pistils have starting showing since last week.

Questions:
She is growing at a rapid rate at this point, probably around 1/2" to 1" a day. If it gets out of control and becomes too tall is there any kind of height training I could do?

Also, I have a moisture meter for the soil. It ranges from Dry(1-3) Moist(4-7) and Wet(8-10). For this scale, what would be the optimal range to have it in to keep from over/under watering?

i am never a proponent for trimming or removing of perfectly healthy leaves & they r all essential in absorbing ur much needed nutrients throughout the plant, so NO. all training is suppose to be done in veg to control height, very hard to do with rigid branches in flower, & this is NOT the time to stress the plant out. having said that you can take some fishing line & tie it off swaying over horizontally, & allow the tops to again grow up towards the light if u run into that. And that is exactly the position I am in with my now nearly 6 footers, lol, and that is exactly what I am going to be doing, dont have much other choice. Ditch the moisture meter. U will notice as well as the exponential growth at this stage, an increase in thirst from ur plant. Water by weight, the best method period for cannabis. The next time u water, making sure you are watering enough for it to come out ur drain holes, set the plant down. Now pick it up again & make a mental note of how heavy it is. Check daily, & when it feels light again, water again. Best method.

Check out my girl, she is growing too big for her box s I had to train her. An easy way to train your plants to stay shorter without doing too much stress is the LST method (Low Stress Method), plenty of good tutorials around the site on how to do that. Keeps your plants from getting too tall and gives good exposures to the lower sites as well.

Good luck on the rest of your grow, looks real nice!

Thanks guys. I'll be sure to follow that method when watering.
And I have been playing around with some string trying to bend the plant over just slightly, mostly to get more light on the lower tiers, but not trying to stress her too much.

I changed the lighting up a little today to help with the lower leaves. Just over 13" now.
Also I tucked some of the lower fan leaves under the smaller ones next to them. It really opened up the area for more light.

As stated before, she is growing vertically at 1/2" to 1" per day, at this point standing just over 14".
My question is this.. Will there be a point during flowering in which she switches her concentration from vertical growth to bud growth? Or will she continue to grow upwards throughout the rest of the grow?

Thanks!
I found a nice listing on eBay, someone wanting to get rid of all their supplies. I got the light, bunch of nutes, TDS meter, and much more for around $50.
It's only brought the temp up by 7-8 degrees on average, not much. Keeps pretty cool for the most part.

Nice grow brah. Your girl looks good. Was she from some mids bagseed? Whenever you harvest her, you should invest in some quality strains. Right now I got Blue Mystic running. She is 7 1/2 weeks in veg haha, you should check her out. Anyways keep up the green work bro. Peace and respect man.
