An electronic sign intended to keep drivers abreast of road construction was hacked on the weekend to send an unauthorized — and far more colloquial — message than the City of Regina intended, setting social media atwitter and leaving city officials unamused.
The sign, on Gordon Road, was supposed to let people know road work was being done, but instead it encouraged drivers to “honk if you luv titties.”
An image of the sign quickly spread on social media.
“I wasn’t very impressed. Don’t appreciate people tampering with our equipment, it’s basically vandalism to public property,” said Norman Kyle, director of roadways and transportation for the city.
He got an email about the sign on Sunday night and said city crews had removed the text by 9 p.m.
“We don’t find it as funny as the general public. We take it fairly seriously because it is city property,” said Kyle. “It’s public property and it’s not appropriate to be using those signs in that manner.”
To be able to change the sign, someone had to go through a physical lock and put in a pin password.
“It could be potentially be one of our employees, it could have been a casual employee,” said Kyle, who added close to 40 people have that password.
In response, the city will be looking at its protocols for securing the signs.
Kyle was unsure of what, if any, punishment the culprit would face if the city busted who it was.
“It depends on what we find out. It’s tough to say at this stage without knowing who or the intent,” he said.
Vandalism like this is rare, according to Kyle, and the matter likely won’t be turned over to police.
“Not at this stage but, again, it all depends what we find out once we look into this a little further,” he said.
Kyle said the sign was supposed to say, “Gordon Road is closed, please take alternative route.”
As for what that was replaced with, Kyle called it a hack meant for malicious purposes.
But was he aware of how many people honked?
“I am not. I don’t know if there was a lot of honking or not.”
