I completely disagree, buds that don't get any light never firm up, and removing them let's the plant put energy towards the buds that are getting light. Just like in tomatoes you remove the suckers so the plants have energy to put into producing the bigger fruits. Like you said you can make hash from fluff but my goal is not to have any, still got plenty of trim to make hash from but smokeable buds are the goal for me. Pruning the bottoms and defoliating allow a lot more airflow also reducing the possibility of mold. Last run I cleaned up the lowers at the flip and defoliated hard at day 21 and had no popcorn buds, my lower buds were as big as the tops. I was actually afraid I had taken too much off when defoliating, but the end results were great when it came time for the scale. Why do you want to remove buds that you'll be able to harvest later? Removing them isn't going to make the top buds bigger. I never trim anything and I still get big fat dense cola's. Everything too small to trim I just strip off and use for making dry ice hash. You can remove those smaller buds but you'll just be reducing your final yield.
