One peice of equipment that I would highly recommend is a $20 light intensity meter - measure your light intensity at 5 and 30 minutes after start up each week to track the decline in output of your bulb. It's amazing how we can slip into an old yellow bulb with half the output and not notice. Buds are smaller, takes longer to flower, less potency, less penetration into the canopy, less developed buds down lower.
It doesn't matter as much that we know what the light intensity figures mean as to simply track the decline in light output so we can decide when is the best time to replace the bulb - a trade off between bulb cost vs loss of yield, potency and time.
