Repairing ballast. What resistors needed?

I have 4 ballast want to repair. 3 digital 1000w and 1 magnetic 600w.

I know what fuses I need and I have them for the digitals, but where I'm confused is the resistors.

I have my bsme in mechanical engineering so I'm very familiar with electrical terminology and wiring diagrams ( resistors capacitors etc...)

I also realized I'll need to solder and possibly pull back the coding on the circuit boards depending.

Also all ballast are different manufacturers. I have a quantum, lumateks, I power and Sun System.

But can anyone tell me what resistors I need to buy?

Or is there a sticky for this?

I haven't done any appliance repair in years, but back in the day . It was just a matter of opening it up and seeing if you could spot the burnt resistor. Be sure to get some solder remover.
And maybe you will get a better answer from someone who actually knows something lol.

The old magnetics . there was always a cap that would go bad . the part the strikes the bulb to ignite. Digitals. No idea if you can service them I replaced a bunch of fans in the nextjen . eBay will have all the parts its all China parts. Can you solder to the circuit board some are very complex if you have a temp contrilolled irn its possible and a solder sucker I can do it but I have no idea what parts to replace . will it cost more then to replace ? Lol sorry I could not help

I think since you have a few types you'll probably just need to open them up and see what's in there.

As someone that does electrical failure analysis in the semiconductor world (17 years) I can tell you this is going to be very difficult. I always ask for the PCB layout file and schematic; without those you will be fumbling in the dark. Next best would be to have a working example so you can check voltage and measure known good circuit resistance to ground and compare to your defective ones. Both things I doubt you will have. As for the resistors; no one is going to be able tell you what to buy ahead of time (in general I do not see a lot resistors going bad and if they do it is probably a symptom of something else defective). Perhaps you enjoy this sort of endeavour, but my advice professionally would be to toss them and save the hours and dollars for something new. If you do decide to go forward I'll keep an eye on this thread and see if I can help you.

I fixed two of them. both digitals. No major parts needed the wires melted in one in the fan stopped working which caused the receptacle to partially melt.

luckily I had a few parts on hand I ordered some dumb stuff off eBay like knobs, the three prong receptacles, fuses, wiring & soder kit. Not really doing it for the money I'm doing it for the challenge.

the i power was fucked up pretty bad. Tomorrow I'm going to rip apart the magnetic and see what I can find. I keep you guys posted. I'm surprised there's not a sticky on this.

By the way I did just order 12 more ballast LOL. couldn't beat the deal. I go used on eBay, I got 1kw lumateks 240v for $360! But shipping and handling was quite a bit. And yes those ones are all in good condition/ they work LOL

The magnetic will most likely be a capacitor and the microfarads and vaoltage will be there. As for the resistors you'll see what they are by looking at them (get the resistor app and punch in the color code) and if you want them on hand buy a pack of 100 assorted, their cheap as chips , good luck with the digital trying to get the coating off lol, I just gave up .

Ya I didn't even try. I seen the coating and laughed. Good idea but...

I have two more to fix now. I bought a lot of them off ebay and there damaged. hopefully there not coated. Lumateks. Hope it's the fuse you can hear the glass tingling around inside I plugged it in and it backfired or something like that LOL

Out of all the brands I.come.across, there's always a dud, but quantum seems to be solid. over lumateks any day. avoid anything greenhouse ipower and even lumatek imo..go orange quantum lol
