Rez help!

45 gal rez, DTW coco
220 ppm city water (700 scale)
dyna grow foliage pro and sometimes protekt. If I use the protekt I always add it first and wait, but it seems to speed up the gunk process.
I have a 250gph pump set up to run a half hour every 8 hours.
Every third-4th day I use clear rez. (well the home made stuff with hth poolshock but same thing)
Temp sits between 68-70.

It usually takes about 6 days to use up the water down to the level the pump cant pump, and then I top off with fresh water and remake.

My problem is, that even with the pool shock, I keep getting this redish brown algae and I cant figure out why. I got black electrical tape over any gaps that should
cover the light leaks. I am going to add more and see if that helps but I am really quite baffled. My flower room rez doesn't get this.

Does anybody else get this? If yes what did the issue end up being? Does your rez smell like a pond?
Will this affect the plants? or will the coco just filter it out as it runs through the top layer?

Any advice would be great. Currently having some issues this run with the veg, meter was slightly off calibrated but other than that or the algae I am at a loss.
Also have some recycle timers coming so I can do like a 30 seconds on / 5 mins off for the waterfall mixing pump.

I can take pics if necessary but its just like a reddish brown layer around the bottom of my reservoir and sides.

Just some suggestions:

Make up less feed, so it's used faster, which means it sits less time and therefore has less time to grow algae...or

Once you get down to the unpumpable feed...remove it and give it to your plants outside, or your veggie garden. Use anti bacterial dish soap to wash the res and then reset it. I have a similar set up as yours, though not quite as big, but it takes about the same amount of time to empty. During the warmer months, I found, I too will get what I refer to as a slime on the sides and bottom of the reservoir, so I will do just as I mentioned. During the winter, with the over all cooler temps, this slime doesn't appear and I can basically go a whole run by operating like you: pumping down to the residual feed and simply topping off / adding new feed. You may have to experiment a little to see if it helps or not.

I was trying to get this to a point I could eventually take a vacation for a week lol!

Did you ever just let the slime go a bit? If yes did it seem to affect the plants?

Currently I am just doing a full wash of the rez like you suggested. I dont have a lot of working space though so it's quite the PITA!

sounds like just nute stain to me

yes some slime is normal
never use a fish product in your rez.

I would let mine go every other reservoir fill up, but that was all the more I was willing to chance. And, no, it did nothing to my plants in terms of ill effects...heck, it probably helped them. Good luck.
