Rick could use a better solvent. IMO the best is ice water extraction using a hot bottle press. You can still infuse it into oils and tinctures.

rick has openly admitted he has no scientific background or any higher education related and through the years he has said some wild and dangerous things.
about idk 7-8years ago (ive been doing this a minute), he would've told you to use paint thinner or naptha and that a purge wasnt necessary as cannabinoids neutralize any toxin.


he was ridiculed then ostracized by the community and dipped out.
he stirred up quite a bit of drama for a few more years and hes quieted down now.

see it works because of the cannabinoids properties. his tech is not only the worst possible extraction but the rice cooker breaks down many of the sensitive terpenes.

now he changes his methods quite often, idk what he uses anymore .

but his very name brings up strong feelings in the old school bho etc hash makers
if its truly medicine.

treat it like it is.. sure it will work, just not as good

ive made something similar.. all you want is decarbed cannabinoids, then put it in a carrier based on your intended use. sublingual, glycerine... oral, coconut oil... topical, unrefined sunflower oil and 5-10% etoh or pg.
to increase bioavailability

because you have a hash oil. you should really decarb over a double boil or similar..holding a steady somewhat low temp and you can watch it decarb, the bubbles rise and pop like popcorn..like popcorn, when it slows its done. especially if your using material with a mix of age, or its unknown

needles to say, you should never use acetone

i use my personal favorite solvent, isopropanol.

ive heard of 40% returns on rs, as in avg.. bho in contrast avgs about 20 maybe a little higher if you have dank. that extra is not beneficial. the added chlorophyll and other content can upset many patients who take it...nausea etc

a quick wash with a somewhat polar solvent like ethanol or iso is what you want.

he uses a long soak and the rice cooker decarb, without a carrier.
its not any easier of a tek really but a much worse product

there are plenty of methods, it really depends on what your preference is, i went for the simple method of using everclear (or something similar) and double boiler.. nothing fancy but the end product speaks for itself-- i'm epileptic, and RSO has made life less stressful~ i'll leave it at that :bigjoint:
i also don't agree with what rick has said when making his oils, i'm just glad he pointed some us in the right direction~

btw, try mixing different batches of trim when making your cannabis oil :wink:

He still performed a great service: he came up with a legitimate extraction tech that the people can gain access to cannabis extract without being bottlenecked through an extractor's cartel.

I agree that paint thinner is a bad solvent for this extraction. Too high a boiling range.

I disagree. The (mono-and sesqui)terpenes are the flavor/odor bearers but I do not think they have any bearing on the ADME of the active drug substances.

We who work in labs have access to some wonderful solvents. But I would not recommend their use to the chemically untrained.

Can you get light gas (naphtha, petroleum ether) over there? You want the stuff that has a boiling range below 60 degrees C. Treat as the very flammable vapor source that it is ...

I like hydrocarbon extractions better than alcohol methods. That said, i have been seeing amazing results from folks who use a quick wash with COLD (minus twenty and below) 99+% isopropanol. That process is not as efficient as a good hydrocarbon extraction, but it is inherently safer in both preparation and solvent residue issues.

sure and people know his name, he certainly helped to spread the medical use. but his techniques were nothing innovative. like i said its really not any easier than doing a quick wash with less heat

when i say terp i mean all the terpenoids etc which does encompass thc. and even with the more traditional terps. almost (all have an effect) all hit receptors
like caryophyllene for example hitting cb2 that is common in modest quantity in most cannabis


but even taking tjem out of the equation, thc is quite sensitive. and quickly breaks down to 8-thc and cbn. both with less medicinal benefit





my personal favorite extraction is a "freeze dried" crystalline isopropanol extract. taki.g less fats and waxes of the leaves that most really cant be removed through winterizing. and etoh can get too dirty too quick amd killl yield


i dont recommend acetome as its a little dirty.
in a study listing 99% "or better" acetone analysis 21 brands

"All 21 acetone sources were found to contain four of the common acetone impurities expected; diacetone alcohol (2-pentanone,4-hydroxy-4-methyl-), mesityl oxide (3-penten-2-one,4-methyl-), phorone (2,5-heptadien-4-one,2,6-dimethyl-) and phenol"

"A large number and broad range of different chemical impurities were found, dependent upon the acetone source. These chemical impurities ranged in complexity from simpleorganic acids, alkanes and olefins, to a variety of substituted benzylcompounds (to highlight just a few)."

as the production of acetone is tied to benzene production

sure but i highly doubt rick ever has, nor is that mentioned when he tells people to use it. some of the compounds having higher bp than thc and others quite light.

its best to avoid any problems. when recommending iso, i tell people to avoid metals, say aluminum and to not buy more than your going to use, ie a gallon jug if your just doing a couple ozs.
the likelihood of something going wrong is slim. but still...

Ive always wondered, the process of making that kind of oil i dont think at any time temps get high enough for decarbing. Unless material has been decarbed prior to solvent bath i dont think eating it will have much effect. Please correct me if im wrong.
