Risks of self-wired PC fans?

Just about ready to germ my seeds and get my first grow under way. I have the cab almost completely ready, and I have two CPU fans that I just got working tonight by cross-wiring them with a DC adapter and sealing the connections with electrical tape. After I connected red/red black/black I then connected them both together more securely with yet another piece of electrical tape.

Now if I had bought it from a store I wouldn't be concerned at all, but just the fact that I did this wiring myself makes me think of nothing but bad news. It will be powered on for 24 hours a day, for about 65 days straight (Afghani KushxLowryder autoflower).

Has anyone had any problems with their self-wired CPU fans? What are the possible dangers at hand, if any? :sad:

Natural is right on. I run my fans (6 in veg, 7 in flower) all day every day (or half day for flower). I did the exact same thing as you (electrical tape) as long as the connections are well taped and the fans are secured well to the box you will have no problems. Happy growing.

you can get this stuff from Home Depot called HEAT SHRINK. Redo the wiring and use HEAT SHRINK instead of electrical tape. You shrink it around the wires using a common blow dryer. It is made for this type of job and is very safe. Cheap too.

I'll echo everyone's comments if it's secure it should be fine, heat shrink is also a good idea, but if you counting cents or penny's then tape will do :D

If you can, solder the wires together and use heat shrink to seal it for a professional finish and ease of mind.

Yes If you can solder those bastards and heat shrink em. It will most deffinantly be a nice professional finish.^^^

I don't use wire nuts, I use butt splices. One wire in one end, the other wire in the other end, clamp down with your vice grip, and tape over with electrical tape just to be sure.

Most electrical tape is rated at over 150 degrees (mine is at 180 degrees), and there is not much electricity running through the wire, so you should be safe. For that extra peace of mind, you should mount the wires off/above the floor, in a place where they will NOT get wet.

Just do it properly twist together, use a wire nut if you have any for a secure connection and good contact, then seal with electrical tape. and remember to keep electricity up high and the water down low because they don't exactly mix well.:blsmoke:

worse case. elect fire. or breakers / fuses blow or trip. as long aas you have the wires covered so they don't touch you should be ok. check from time to time to see if you can see any wire. if you see wire re cover with tape. put more then one peace over your splices. its best to use wire nuts then tape. check wires for heat if there is heat there is a short (shorts bad)
