RIU advice is so bad

No one misunderstand me here... I am not bashing "RIU" or the mods/admins. I'm bashing much of the advice offered on here...

The typical advice posted from many folks on RIU has gotten so bad.

I've tried to help out when I can. I mention with my advice if it is from a) experience b) something i read c) popular opinion d) university study.
For some reason I enjoy helping out here on RIU, and at my volunteer position with a certain county ext office. It's fun to talk shop and help people out.

I am no god of gardening though, and I do not claim to be. There are some areas I am experienced in and am happy to help. I do not claim to know everything and I do not tell people that their "OPINION" is wrong. Notice that word... OPINION.

But seriously. The posters who are typing up nonsense as advice to people looking for help is ridiculous. I like RIU. But I'm also sort of looking for a new site. It's getting filled with bullshit. I'm not sure if every site is like that. But RIU is definitely flooded with it.

Has anyone ever noticed that (aside from UB and a few) the people who go in to threads and say "you are wrong", "i am right", "that is stupid", etc etc... are just spewing bullshit hearsay cannabis grower bullshit...?

Then to make it worse... the people who are not nonsense ranting trolls do not have the desire to troll back. So the loudest voice gets heard and that voice is the clueless asshole telling everyone that his/her diagnosis is the only correct one and the other folks posting are idiots...

I'm glad I learned botany the old fashioned way before I ever even heard of sites like RIU. If I had not, my head would be full of so much bullshit nonsense.

So please... cocky 3-4 grow noob fucks posting like they are the fucking King of Cannabis... stop. Advising others is not a good outlet for an ego boost. If you speak from EXPERIENCE you will not step out of your real knowledge. If you repeat everything the previous generation of RIU trolls ranted then this will just go and on. Advising is not a good source for boosting your ego.

I was a hardcore beer brewer before I got into cannabis; it's the same on homebrewing message boards, too.

Something about technical hobbies like cannabis cultivation and beer brewing brings out...well....the precise type of folks you're referring to. Know-it-all jerks who cruise the boards looking for threads they can hate on, or newb growers they can ridicule. Their participation is more about "I'm so much fucking better than anyone else" instead of being part of a community that's cooperative and helpful.

You get to know who these folks are pretty quickly, and learn to ignore them even quicker.

Peace.

Can't say that I disagree. All discussion forums conform to a single universal truth - bad begets bad. Good begets both good and bad, but bad only begets bad. As the bulk of serious growers was driven away by the trolls, what's left? The less you know, the louder you are and the cycle continues. There's virtually no incentive to share one's experience, as it almost always begets a tolling response from the sidelines. So why bother?

There's only one winner in all this and it's not the cultivation community.

Opinions are like a coin, there is always 2 sides. Getting advice here or online anywhere is just that...ADVISE. If you do not research that advise and run into problems, the problem is not the internet.

Its YOU!

Do your own homework and you will be able to tell the difference between good and bad advice.

Rollitup can give best value if you put a little work into it. If you consult the community as a whole by starting a thread asking a question or "Help! What's wrong with my babies???" you are basically asking every single user's opinion, noob or vet, and inviting every single troll to jump up and down on you. Spend a little time reading here at all and you can figure out who knows anything and who just has a compulsion to post all day, and you can ask them for help and information directly, either through PM or through their own well-established threads. Rep, post count and join date don't really help since there is such a strong social experience here that's largely to one side of mj cultivation and people gain rep from being friendly and funny.

I know a lot more than I did when I joined here and, consequently, don't give out nearly as much advice as I did when I was a noob.

Isnt it ironic that the more one learns, the less inclined to share their knowledge they are. I'm the same in most cases. I try to stick to discussing facts and only disagreeing with others' opinions if they are factually incorrect. And I do my best to clarify what type of information I'm providing, whether its cited from a study or something I figured out along the way(which I usually still try to verify with some type of scientific explanation). Yet I still get people touting their experience growing pot for however long is more credible than the university study with a $1mil lab and half dozen of experienced(and educated) scientists I got my information from. And when I insist that the facts disprove their opinions, 75% of the time I just start getting called arrogant and egotistical. Like I'm sharing someone else's findings to make ME feel smart lmao. Theres just no getting around that kind of ignorance.

One thing I like about homebrewing forums is that genuinely good brewers have medals and awards to back up their advice. If they're cocky about it, step up your game and show them up at the next national competition. In the meantime, hold your tongue and learn from them.

Seed companies with deep pockets are about the only ones that win 'awards' in this hobby so 'good' advice on canna boards is often backed up with statements like; 'i gro da bom cuz all my peeps iz like whoa when dey puff ma gear'.

To all you expert growers who bemoan the fact that your advice is sometimes panned by trolls:

Get a thicker skin.

Learn to consider the opinions of other, if only for the two seconds it takes to read their posts. You can always learn from others, ever if you learn that the person is a jerk. Only takes one or two reads to determine that, and then you're free to ignore them from that point forward. If you have confidence in your advice based on experience and knowledge, who gives a FUCK what some troll has to say about it? Be secure in the knowledge that for every troll who responds, there's more than one appreciative member of the community like myself who will thank you.
