do you put water in it, like a sink trap? i need to understand how it works so i make it right. mine wouldn't be so straight and perfect.

There are two chambers. You fill it 1/2 way full of water / vodka at the most (I only put enough liquid to fill the tube that connects the two chambers). The chambers keep the water from blowing out the one end during vigerous fermentation and sucking into the carboy during atmospheric pressure changes - but it allows CO2 to escape freely while keeping air out of the carboy.

I have never seen it bubble in reverse - usually this chamber will fill with all the liquid and by that point the pressure is greater in the carboy than the atmospheric pressure so it will not bubble in reverse. This guy looks like he is sucking air out of the carboy through the attached tube.

I am sure it would be more interesting / classy looking than the plastic airlock. The chambers do not need to be clear but they need to be transparent / translucent so that you can see liquid level / airlock activity.
