Rockwool or Hydroton..Or Both???

Okay, so Ive been seeding in Vermiculite and transferring to hydroton since the beginning of my hydroponic experience with the Ionic Feeds..I havent really noticed any problems with it, and am quite pleased with the results..Although Ive noticed that some people like to seed in vermiculite or even smaller rockwool cubes, then transfering them to slightly larger ones placed shallowly into the hydroton rocks. Is this method better than just using hydroton? And if so..Are the ph-lowering effects of rockwool really that hard to keep up with?

i like this method.. i am not comfortable with vermiculite or any medium that retains water (more than soil)

never had a problem with PH and rockwool

Does rockwool have any benefits over clay pellets? And are you usin rockwool cubes or the rockwool pellets? Kinda curious on how you setup rockwool into a netpot, as from what I hear you dont want it touching the nutrient solution very much at all.

rockwool is easy to use from start to finish.. it germinates seeds and roots clones BOTH with great ease and success..

rockwool is easy to transfer to any medium..

rockwool holds water and nutrients longer than clay.. way longer.. this is not BETTER or WORSE.. depends on what you LIKE.. ya feel me on that?

rockwool for starting seeds and clones is fantastic cause it holds moisture.. BUT if the cube stays MOIST wonce the plant hits maturity, it can lead to STEM ROT.. yikes..

Yeah, see..So that's one of the benefits to clay pellets then. Stem rot is virtually impossible to get, unless you just know completely nothing about hydroponics. Also, Im growing in 3" net pots..Do larger net pots produce larger plants, or am I good with what I have?

net pot size is really no big deal.. BUT the larger the net, USUALLY the larger the plant it can hold without it falling over! BUT a 1 inch net can grow a HUGE plant.. BUT it wont have any support.. so you wouldprobably have to tie it up...

Rockwool and hydroton can quite often go hand in hand, it depends on how your growing.

Right now i'm growing in just the cubes, i started in a small cube transfered that into a 4" cube and then when the roots were coming out the bottom i put another cube underneath. Once sex has been decided i'm going to put these 4" cubes on 1m slabs of rockwool at a rate of 3 per strip. For the entire life of these plants I will not need hydroton.

I'm shortly going to be taking some clones from them at which point i will use the starter cubes and when they root I will be putting the clones into a dwc system. To keep the cube in place and prevent it from getting algae and also give the roots room to grow i'm going to use hydroton here.

Both have their uses in hydroponics and are often used together, it all depends on how your going to grow.

Okay dammit..Cant find my usb port thingy for my camera...Ima have to go to wally world today and try to find another one. Didnt really ever plan on uploading pictures to the net, so there wasnt much use of the cord to me...

im putting a slightly germinated seed in a small rockwool cube, and putting it in the middle of my hydroton in my gh bucket setup, is this a good idea? i dont want to screw up the seed, its the only one that germinated out of the 2 that were given to me so far, and its s. african dp x skunk 1. Oh, and i leave my water dripp setup on overnight without my 400wat hps light on, is that leaving the rockwool to wet? i dont want to have that slime shit build up on everything again.

start your own thread... Once the cube is wet, There is no need to keep watering it,,, unless of course, there are roots hanging out of it....
