I have seen panthers that live up to 8 years with proper vitamins and gutloading, although im not too fond of veileds, as they are the more aggressive ones of the bunch. what breed were they carrying at the herp shop?? oh witch book too?? LLLreptile has a very direct book about chams directly. heres wat ive found on it...

Chameleons - Natures Hidden Jewels

CHAMELEONS: NATURE’S HIDDEN JEWELS By Petr Necas

This landmark work represents the second edition of this book in English. Nearly 10 years has passed since it’s original publication, and in that time the author has done a tremendous amount of research on these animals and expanded greatly on the original text.

One of the most notable aspects of this book (and other books by Mr. Necas) is the accuracy of the facts and attention to detail. Taxonomically speaking, this book is as current as one can get. Nearly all living species are represented, including full classifications for each.

Interestingly, this book also includes previous classifications as well as discussions regarding why said animals were re-named.

The first portion of the book covers every caveat of chameleon biology, anatomy, and physiology. Reproduction (both in the wild and in captivity) is covered in detail, as are color-change mechanics, behavioral caveats, and much more!

Nearly the entire second half of this book is dedicated to specific species profiles. Full Latin names are given, as are common names, identification tips, range and habitat information, and captive care notes. Additionally, most species are represented by a number of excellent color photos.

The appendices of this book are superb as well. You will find complete lists of every chameleon species, both fossil and recent, as well as quick reference charts with data on habitat, reproduction, and size for many species. The book wraps up with an extremely thorough bibliography.
This book is geared towards the serious chameleon fan, but will no doubt be enjoyed by anyone who takes the time to flip through it’s pages. I wouldn’t call this work a captive care book, but instead more like an encyclopedia of the family Chameleonidae.

Overall, this book has no shortcomings. It is as well done and complete as a book can be. For anyone interested in chameleons, both wild and captive, I give this book my highest recommendation!

Hard bound, 380 glossy pages, and hundreds of full color photos and drawings. High quality, German binding will last a lifetime. Get your copy today from LLLReptile.com for only $65.00!! In stock and ready to ship!!

pretty sure that is a senegal chameleon!! IMO i would stay clear of buying one i've heard tons of horror stories. from personal experience... i and a few others have had mostly hard times keeping these guys alive! The reason is cause almost all that you find for sale are wild caught and full of parasites, in most chams, a few courses of antibiotics would solve that problem, but unfortunately senegal chameleons react badly to even the most gentle of meds! What you need to find is a breeder and get a Captive Born! I helped a friend hatch some eggs a wildcaught female senegal laid and personally kept a few...sold em all but kept the best looking male....lived almost 7 years! If you are thinkin of getting a cham, go panther!! so many different color variations to choose from! Glorifindel-3.JPGpanther_chameleon_111104.jpgAmbanja-3.jpgMrLemieux.jpg

3 years is very low, mayb just that type of cham? i know panthers have a good 7-8 year life span if maintained properly. they are not easy to properly care of neither. gutloading, dusting, different dusts, ect.... BE READY! the first few months is all a learning experience, for you and your cham. hes (or she) learning you just as much as you are to it. they do have quite the lil memory too, picky eaters so they know wat the want. mine ONLY eats superworms, at that its hard to keep the calcium up...it dont stick much to a worm, not as much as a cricket at least.

i thought i saw another tegu.
this is my first tegu and he so damn cool. they grow fast too. sometimes he'll just hangout while im holding him or, he'll just want to walk around exploring the rest of the room. so curious. and strong ive got a fan that stands like 3-4ft tall, he'll bite one of the legs and pull the fan along the carpet floor.
