Ok how about this:
I can accept if I have a root ball but being root bound is totally unacceptable
how do you know the difference?

a root ball is the roots and the soil attached to them when you remove the plant from the ground. obviously, this is slightly different when growing hydro.
root bound means that the plant has been growing too long in its container and the roots become tangled, often growing in circles. this can stunt the growth of the plant and even kill it due to the inability for the plant to properly absorb water, nutrients and oxygen via the root system.
