root bound?

I'm actually curious what actually defines it as root bound I understand what they look like when they are getting there but is it when it's on the outside of the walls? I've also heard round buckets the root cannot actually go back inside the dirt once it reachs to the edge it just gets more roots towards the end vs a square one it can actually divert back to the middle of the dirt, also anyone heard of this?

In general roots will go where the moisture is. A plant is root bound when it has outgrown the container the plant is in. Not enough oxygen and they tend to almost 'strangle' each other.
