Root rot hell

I've been through hell and back with root rot and my plants are actually just now recovering from a transplant because my red was leaking light. I thought I finally had it this time. I got a heavy duty storage tote and I put Mylar over the whole top to keep any light from getting in but I still have a very thin layer of brown algae I guess coating my pipes to the airstones. Is this just going to make root rot again? I use the aqua guard also. Any help would b great.

All I can say is coco coir and beneficial microbes is the way to go!! Try researching beneficial bacteria for DWC because root rot is basically un-benficial bacteria/parasite (pythium). I've heard on a growing podcast about new research on hydroponics being compatible with beneficial microbes so check it out and share it with the RIU. hope this helps!

I'd fill the system with nutes that have 0.5mL bleach per gallon and let that run for 24 hrs then changeout nutrients and run heavy doses of orca tea.

12 lpm of air per plant or the pumps a whimp.

I believe hydro guard is a chicken manure compost. (It's the same thing as aqua shield?) so it's beneficial bacteria. The zone would kill everything in hydro guard, making them non compatible together.

I am running my Rez with HydroguArd is that the same thing??
Wow, I suppose I am actually not a noob anymore and can offer some advise from personal experience!
Hydroguard= Chicken Shit, and I havent used it and actually have a bottle on my shelf! See, I have been there.

Beneficials are great, and I have made a few different teas and also "Great White", which is pretty much every beni you need in one powder.

First thing about beneficials is, they dont fix problems. All they do is help keep the beneficial bacteria's numbers in high enough population to outnumber the bad ones. This does not do you any good unless you make the living conditions to balance things in the same direction, and in my situation I went with multiple solutions, but I will stick with what I see here.

I would lower the water level because it seems you are touching the net pots. Get it about an inch and a half below. I dont know what kind of ait pump situation you have but it doesn't look like its really rollin and maybe thats why your afraid to lower it? ;) It needs to be ROLLING. The oxygen in the root zone not only eliminates the place for anaerobic bacteria(Pythium etc) to live, but it is like steroids for your plants. This is the biggest reason why DWC can show such superior growth, and I think it is often overlooked for its crucial roll in doing deepwater correctly. There are ways to get dissolved oxygen without air pumps and such, but this involves waterfalls and more stuff so I wont get into it. If you want to know about my system just ask.

Water temp. I havent really had an issue with this, but I run a chiller and still had root rot problems so go figure. I would imagine it is similar to the oxygen thing where given the right situations the bad stuff will take over.

Nutes. I dont know what your runnin, but I had all kinds of root issues at what people consider very low PPMs. I run my plants at peak flower in 500ppm max, and they fucking rage. I am currently starting to flush and its been at 200 for a week and they still are not deficient. Deepwater packs the nutrients in the plants for you, no need to pack them in the solution unless they are deficient, and in deepwater it is usually calcium.

Last but definitely not least, brew yourself a tea. Here is my simple tea that works great for me and has all the good stuff.

5 gal of RO water
5 cups of Ancient Forest
50 ml of GH Floralicious

I put the ancient forest in a panty ho to keep it clean, and then put it all in a bucket with TONS OF AIR. I cant stress this enough. Three stones minimum for 5 gallons. Let it brew for 24-48 hours and boom, use 1 quart per 10 gallons or so.

I wish I knew all that stuff when I started deepwater.

OH Yea!! One more thing.
LITFA(Leave it the fuck alone)
when I started I was always checkin PH, thinking something was wrong, tryin to fix it, and then just stressin out the plants. Remember, even changes that are in the direction the plants need can stress them out when done too fast. Let the PH swing between 5.5 and 6.2 and you should be good to go. I also recommend RO only for Ph stability and control, but if your tap can be managed then do it.

One tip on the air lines, the clear ones act as a fiber-optic strand and will carry light into your buckets. Use the black version for the part that goes into your bucket if you can and the clear version everywhere else, this does require an inline connector for each bucket.

I have 2 10-30 gal pumps and a 60 gal pump my Rez is 20 gal. The water is high because the roots just came back in because this was right after a transplant.

I guess my question is how can I keep from getting root rot. Is making ewc tea the solution?

Here are all my chemicals and nutes
