Root tips poking out of drainage holes

If the root tips start poking out the bottom of the drainage holes, is this necessarily a sign of being root bound? I'm using tall 5 gallon pots, and it seems that every single plant eventually shows roots coming out the drainage holes on the bottom of the pot.

It is not a sign of being rootbound. It is, however, a sign that you should transplant into something larger. Those roots are looking to grow, and the bigger the root system, the higher the yield. Happy farming!

It doesn't mean they are root bound or need a bigger pot. The first thing roots do is shoot to the bottom of containers make a circle then start filling out the rest of the space. You can tell when they need a new container if you need to water them every day.

While it is not necessary to transplant at this sign, it is recommended. As long as the root system is strong enough to be moved without breaking apart, a deeper pot is a great idea. Use your own judgement when transplanting. How long has the plant been in the current pot? If longer than 2 weeks, chances are it should be upsized for max growth. Having to water every day is not a real indicator of when to transplant. In fact, watering in small amounts each day is better for your plants! Hope this helps.
Happy smoking :leaf:
