A rootbound plant is not a happy plant compared to a plant in a larger pot that has alot of soil to explore and extract salts and water from. A rootbound plant is often stunted, doesn't uptake nutrients well, is a maintenance headache, etc.

yep the easiest way to avoid root binding is to water and feed often, i groow all in 1 quart containers and have never had a problem(except one plant i left outside during a move in 30 degree weather lol) i use schults expert orchid food(19-31-17) during veg. being made for orchids it is very easy on the plants and i use it every watering. i water every day about 200 ml each time. during flowering ill use an all organic bloom enhancer made by a local nursery.

actually using this method i have experimented with multiple plants in one container and have had just as good success with 2 plants in a 1 quart container by uping the watering to twice a day at 150 ml each time. i know all the knowlage about competing plants and such but i have refined my system to where it works, if your a beginer i would still say one plant per and bigger containers are better.
 
i give up. i am going to do my best to nEVER address this subject again. seems to piss people off. people who "know better".

ps: i got my camera charging now so ill post some pics of the grow i started this last week, 6 pots, 3 with one plant(one pure indica, one sativa, and a hybrid from the looks of it, and 3 pots with 2 per pot. the three singles broke ground on april 29 and the others i germed a bit later and broke ground on the 2nd.
 
All things considered (and there are many factors at play here), I see no advantage to using pots that induce a potbound condition, especially early on in the plant's development. Doesn't mean I haven't grown some pretty big plants in very small pots, but that was usually experimental stuff destined for the compost pile eventually.

I don't like maintenance headaches, and even in a 3 or 5 gallon pot, I've had to dump about 1 liter of water TWICE a day come flowering time to each pot, it's all relative to the root system and foliage mass.......

i agree to much matn. with smaller pots. just imagine if he had that plant in a 10ft by 10 ft hole. :hump: but that fuckin plant looks awsome. :joint:
 
So when are you guys going to settle this and grow an 8 foot sativa out of a shotglass?

I see some above average nuances with your pots and techniques, but they are nothing worthy of holding this pissing contest over.

Can't find any pictures of rootbound? Give me a fucking break. Is it just me or are flamebaiters getting lazy?
 
So what would answer this question or better help all to understand is; do the roots stop growing once a plant goes into flowering or past the stretch phase? So if a plant is healthy and the roots are healthy up until after the stretch phase, there should never be a reason to repot since the roots have stopped growing and are there just to uptake water and nutrients?

how can something be root bound, if all you have to do is feed or water more offten. :hump:

It's not quite that simple. Root hairs, the main unit for absorbing water and salts, are in a continuous state of dieing and being generated under conditions where the root system is not restricted. Check this out: http://books.google.com/books?id=Z2...=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2#PPA37,M1

It's all in the balance anyway. I just don't see the value of using small pots unless you are happy with small plants, and anyone that has been gardening for years understands the detrimental impact of potbound plants.

Yes, root production pretty much shuts down once a plant goes into a flowering response.

I'm pretty sure fdd knows all about this....I see he has plants in ground and pots....I think the point was that you can still grow big size plants in a small container....his potted plants are bigger than most peoples plants in ground......hell, If I had a "SMALL" plant like the one fdd posted in the pot, I'd be happy.....that shit is taller than me and I'm 6ft!!It would be senseless to have 20 gallon pots all over your property, it's counter productive!! Hello....it is an annual!! even if its a mother plant, you dont need a big pot..........just my .02 cents........

but if that were in a 20 gallon pot think of what it would have produced, 3 or 4 time that.:hump:
