Roots exposed in flood/drain

Hello,

Im thinking about giving a flood/drain system a try, but im curious about the roots. I see a lot of growers just put bricks of rockwool down, and end up with a bunch of open space in the drain table.

My question is, when the roots grow out of the cubes and down into the table, doesnt the light hurt them? I've seen some putting down coco mats along the bottom for the roots to grow into, was considering doing that.

Just wanted to ask the professionals thanks in advance for any answers.

Oh, if light intensity matters, ill probably be using a QB 550 once I get around to doing all this.

Light doesn't hurt roots. Dryness and heat does.

You can always go mediumless. Just make some sort of lid for your flood tray and drop rooted clones in. You can SoG like below or you could put a single plant in there and veg it for a scrog, or anything in between, all in a 2 inch netpots.
