I've had thrips. They like to hide on the undersides of the leaves and shadows while eating the fuck out of your plants. They look like little tiny specs elongated dirt at first sight. Then you notice one move and you know it's not going to be a good day. Doesn't quite sound like what you have though. I had to google thrips and use a 30x scope to actually identify the little pricks. I doubt I ever would have noticed them floating in the water.

if there black/brown, and in the soil runoff they are fungus gnat larvae. which roots organic soil is notorius for. usually putting cut up peices of yellow sticky white fly traps on top of the soil to catch the adults gets rid of em for me. and try to let your new soil dry out before using it. the larvae need moisture to survive.

thrip larvae are white/yellow and will be seen running around on the leaves, usually the underside. adult thrips are yellow-brown and winged, and i usually never see adults on my thrip infested plants, but the larvae will leave white shiny looking spots on your leaves.

you can sprinkle cinnamon on top of the soil after watering. Or you can sprinkle corn meal. I prefer cinnamon. The girls LOVE it! and the little buggers don't have a chance! :)

root aphids will run out the wholes on the bottom and on the rim of pot, then make their way up the stem of plant and eventualy will fly.

thrips: in run off and underside of leaves. put a half a potato on soil, cut side down, you will see them gather on the potato.

fungus gnats, look like little white worms with black heads. then flyers

for thrips use spinosad
for aphids teardown, met 52, or go chemy systemic....lots of choices not all work, each has their own pros/cons.
gnats: use BTI and cut down watering.

i learned this lesson last year: never buy roots soil. it always has bugs or other problems.

I left my roots soil bag in a black garbage bag, in the sun, for 3 days. I think that got most of them.
That's so funny that you do that. I do the same. I though I was the only one. It really works too. although I think with the condensation build up You can get mildew So I like to dry out the soil with the bag open then seal it back up in a black back for a few days in the hot sun. get over 150 in the bag
