Roots turning brown what should I do? w/ pic

The first pic is yesterday, the others are today! I did my 3 week reservoir change and added full strength Fox Farm nutes yesterday. Everything was good then, temp, PH, and even the roots looked good. When I went to check my PH this morning (which was good) I noticed some browning of the roots. I do add about a 1/2 tsp hydrogen peroxide per gal. water already. Could it be from light seeping through my tote or net pods? Is this normal after adding full strength nutes? Has this happened to anyone else? What should I do now? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thankx :wall:

I have not used those nutes but I'd say it is just discoloration from the nutes. 1/2 tsp per gallon of h2o2 is not enough, assumingit is 3%. Try a tablespoon per gallon.

I use 3ml of 35% peroxide per gal. Regular peroxide has some bad stuff in it, read up on it and you may consider using food grade peroxide. good luck

Got a link for that reading? My 3% has nothing in it.

Where can I buy 35% FOOD GRADE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE ? Can I get it at CVS or at the Super Market, or do I have to go to a Hydroponic store? ty

I've been using the brown bottle 3% that's all it says for active ingredients. And the only inactive ingredient is purified water.

i have heard feeding w/ fox farm nutes, if you use their schedule/strength recommendations, you will burn the heck out of/kill your plants.

It's the light coming through your lid and/or high water temps.
its possible light might be seeping through the net pods or even the tote its self. I just ordered some Mylar to cover the top and sides of the tote with. Water temp?? good question I'll check it what should it be around? But as someone else said I think it just might be discoloration from adding the nutes last night! I don't think algae would grow that fast over night. thanks

I checked and water temp is 78.3 * F

the room temp is 83.1* F

I think you got some valuable information about the peroxide but I have to agree with the others about the light. Those totes are not light proof, they are just light resistant. I can hold an empty tote up next to the window and see the light pretty well through the walls. That's definitely not light tight. You could mylar the outside of the tote, you could put a heavy white plastic around it, you could even paint it. I think the light is your issue though. Some other guy mentioned the FF nutes and the feeding cycle, he's right. It's not really the nutes themselves that is going to cause the color change, it's the concentration of them starting to burn your roots.

OK I am using Fox farm nutes, they are working awsome in my DWC. There are a few rules to go by though. First carefull with organic nutes like BIg bloom. they introduce lots of living things that breed in the water and clog up roots and even cause root rot or under oxygenate the water. Now if you have a problem use a couple of table spoons of H202 for 14 gallons or so(hydrogen peroxide the 3% kind you have lying around the house). This will kill all the living bacteria causeing the root rot, it will also oxygenate the water. So if you need to Foliar feed with big bloom once a week. Or give a pinch in the res. all the rest of the fox farm nutes should be fine. I find that if I have deficianceys the fox farm trio packs do the trick for remedy (use this chart, print it,its the best http://www.greenmanspage.com/guides/tables.html).

Now I have found that when I lower the Ph all day long everyday it is very hard on my plant/s. I think that plant is getting way to much potassium (or what ever chemical is being used in the PH down, can build up way to much salt). So your plants take up nutes when the ph is right. So in a sense when you balance your PH you are in turn feeding the plant. SO when you add water or nutes, balance the ph, or balance once a day or every other day. Your plants dont need fed every min of the day. Also, put one air line/stone in your rez per 1.5-2 gallons of water. They love it. see if that helps you out

I feel it is a combination of the nutes at full strengths and Light seeping through the tote! So I ordered Mylar to cover the top and sides for now, next time after harvest I will paint the tote too. Should I change out my water now and run plain water or 1/2 strength nutes. what can I do well I wait for the Mylar, it could take up to a week before i get it.

Well, my take on 3% is simply that hundreds or thousands of dwc growers use it regularly and I have never heard anything like this. As long as it works for me, and it does, I'm going with - if it ain't broke don't fix it.
