Rotting smell,arrrgh!!!

Hey guys i am here with another noob freak out about my grow.heres the situation.

I am growing 2 plants in 2 identical containers ,same mix of compost lime and perlite ,watered at the same time but i noticed that one of the pots is significantly heavier than the other one...So i lift the heavier one up and (dunno why) sniffed the drainage holes and there is a proper horrible rotting smell.I lift the other one and it smells like it should,just a nice earthy soiley smell.

WTF is going on?

Something tells me that this could be a big problem...would a flush with bleach water kill the plant??.

bleach will kill the plant if the plant isnt showing signs of any problems don't touch it

yes but it just out of the seedling stage and the pot is a bit big for it,the roots are probly not anywhere near the bottom yet ,and i fear if they get that far they will rot...

well its up to you but i really wouldn't your plant will tell you if there is a problem i think your just panicking at the moment i was the same on my 1st grow

yeh,maybe i'll let the soil get nice and dry and then flush the shit out of it next watering

why flush ,its not burnt. Let it dry as much as possible ,the root system could be rotten.

u could have already lost the roots by now. transplant them if its still small and grab some beneficial bacteria. even in soil it helps prrevent root rot and keeps them healthy. also line the bottom of ur pots with hydroton or even just straight perlite. it helps them drain and it doesnt let the water collect at the bottom of the pots and go nasty and bad which is probably that smell. it will turn intoroot rot if it hasnt already. i recomend smart pots cuz they drain completely and promote healthier root growth than regular plastics and u dont have to line the bottoms.

you mentioned your soil is made of compost, I assume the soil is waterlogged and no oxygen can react with the organic matter and you now have an anaerobic decomposition situation, that will give you that rotten odor.
I would suggest plunging a pencil down into the pot all over to allow air to get down into the soil to help it dry out and get oxygen to the organics and more importantly down to the roots if any of them are alive still.
This is why you should grow with small pots and gradually repot as they grow larger.

Yeh i am aware of the start in a small pot thing ,i did have them in small pots,but i transplated them way to early.There is really no chance the rotting smell is the roots as they are too young to have roots that far down.I'll just let it dry out and see what happens ,the plant looks fine for now.If it dies i still got another one ,i just don't get how i have an issue with one pot and not the other considering the identical conditions.

I don't know if you are using molassess but i do and the first watering or two with molassess and it always smells funny at first. i assume it has to do with the microbes in the soil being more active.

are you using those pots that supposedly hold water at the bottom of the pot? if so, trash em dude, i had those once and they freaking ruined my first really nice plant... and the soil did smell like rotting crap

I agree, simpler = better
