As a first time grower, there are much more experienced minds on this thread, but I would say keep it simple for your first one.

Regular potting soil with a lot of perlite added. And I used a jiffy pellet to eradicate the room for error (breaking taproots ect.) I just try and think "What would mother nature do"

Well, what If I can't get my hands on any perlite, or what If I can't get my hands on seedling mix soil?
That's why I asked If I could plant the seed straight into a sponge and once It has grown out of the sponge I would plant the seedling straight into regular soil with added nutrients.
Keep in mind that I would go for a kitchen sponge or bathsponge, which ever works best.

Where do you live where you can buy special flower soil but not perlite? (I'd be willing to bet 100% of garden centres stock perlite, it's not expensive)

I'm sure you could germ a seed in a sponge, warm damp and dark is about all that's needed. I'd be worried about damaging the taproot pulling it out though

I intended to leave the sponge on, and plant it in to the soil If that would do the trick. I've spent all my money on growlights and I'm still young lol.
As long as It doesn't stunt the plant like the one I have now.
As for germination I simply leave the seeds in a damp paper towel, and once the root has emerged I'd put it into the soil.

Seedling starter mix is as inexpensive as $5. Go to your hardware store. They should have it.

It won't fix the problem.

I get it. You want to use the soil you have.

Perlite won't make the soil less nutrient rich. It allows for proper aeration.

I gotta be honest. I need to be done helping you.

Your just looking for any option but the right one.

Sine you're hear and you brought it up, does being in starter soil make such a difference?

I went from seed > peat plug > regular soil with peat and perlite (I read autos don't like transplanting)

Next time can I do seed > starter soil in small pot > final soil in big pot or will this be a problem?

I always transplant my autos. I go soak, seed straight into solo, then to my final pot. Generally a 3 gallon.

If its not an auto i go soak, solo cup, 1 gallon plastic pot, 5 gallon plastic pot, 10 gallon grow bag as its final resting spot. Keep in mind this is all out doors.

There are soils and plenty of people that go solo cup straight into hot soil with success. But I find the best early growth comes from not too hot of a soil and up potting at the right times to the right next level of soil.

This is indoors. But the same principles apply.

So for example. I used Whitney farms seedling starter in a solo cup,

Gave it 10 days

Up potted to 1 gallon plastic pots with a bit of a stronger soil. Recipe 420 hy-por

More nutes than seedling starter but less nutes than a full blown hot soil.
And this is yesterday. 2 weeks 3 days.


I will give these until Saturday and then they will go into a 3 gallon grow bag due to tight space. When that transplant happens I will use the recipe 420 red label which is the hot bag.

This succession has worked for me outdoors everytime with great success and so far flawless in the tent as well.

Excellent information, thanks I hated having a small seedling in a 15litre pot, made getting watering right so much harder until like week 2/3

Just read a lot of bad things about transplanting an auto

Going straight into hot soil makes sense as a bad move, you wouldn't give a baby a steak dinner straight away either, I'll try this next time

Looks awesome. I'll buy some seedling starter mix tomorrow, and mix one half of the pot with it, as you mentioned before.

Bought some seed starter mix and got some perlite. Added some to my grow medium. Still waiting for my grow light.

Pure autoflower plant will stress out and flower right after transplant. There are semi-autoflowers on the market: if they have space to grow roots they don't flower. You can transplant those (if they haven't flowered yet) and they will grow bigger.

Interesting, I'm guessing this is fairly well advertised when buying seeds? So much more to learn!
