Sand To Trick The Gnats?

I have heard that you can put about a quarter of an inch layer of sand over the soil to trick the little black gnats that lay eggs in the soil... Will the sand hurt the plant, or get in the way of watering? Will it even work to trick the gnats?:leaf:

I don't know if 1/4" is enough I've always used 1-2". It always works. It causes no issues as long as the sand you use is sterile and clean and not some crap you scooped out of the cat litter box or collected from all the ashtrays outside dept stores. :)
