SCROG vs. “Traditional”

I’ve only grown normal plants to this point but am planning to set up a 12x12’ grow room with about 100 plants. Does anyone growing on this scale just let the plants grow? Everything I’m seeing online is about SCROG, is it like accepted that this method is far better? If so, what are the main reasons?

How much experience do you have? 100 plants in 144 sq ft is less than 1.5 sq ft per plant with zero dead space for walking between them to water/ inspect. I'd imagine it would be hard to train them in a scrog at that density as well. I've seen lots of grows that use the nets to support the plants in density's like you're talking about but they're not really weaving branches trying to fill out a net. The main benefit to scrog style growing is an even and dense canopy but there are other training methods like topping and supercropping that work as well. With 100 plants I'd imagine you would want them growing fairly naturally with just a topping or supercropping maybe to even out the tops.

Doing 100 plants for your first scrog is a bit overkill. I'd start with a smaller amount first to practice with.

With that many plants and your grow room, I'd just let them go. Some topping should be enough

Yes I would have to agree. If you haven't run 100 plants in 144 Sq ft you might want to cut that # of plants down and then decide if it is a doable thing. This is in my 5 x 5 and I tie all them bitches down b4 the flip. Thanks Coastal Mary. 7 plants in 25 Sq ft and it's a bit crowded. But your the one doing the maintenance. Good luck!

Thanks for these replies. I’ll probably cut the number of plants down from my original estimate. I had read you can put a plant per square foot but the ones I’ve grown in my tent have taken up more space than that.

Thank you, this is what I was thinking but in my research it kept coming up as SCROG to maximize yield. I’ve grown plants well enough before but never at this scale and never with any netting set up.

I've done 30-121 at a time in a 20x30 room, but I like to have plenty of real estate to work in..... In a 12x12, you should be running around 30 max. I've found that you can get just about the same yield with less plants, more training, and longer veg time. I've run 78, and 30, and got about the same yield. It's less work, and makes your environment easier to control. You can check out my grow journal in my signature.

im trying to imagine what 100 tomato cages in a 12x12 would look like. Putting a trellis in would be a lot quicker and accomplishes the same thing as putting a tomato cage on every plant.
