The article Cx2H posted is pretty informative. However, not to burst your bubble, but unless you have 10 ft tall ceilings there really isn't a point in looking into DE bulbs. They need to be around 4 feet away from the canopy, and with 8 ft ceilings that doesn't leave you much wiggle room. You could train the plants to the point where they don't get taller than 2 feet, but that kind of defeats the purpose of the DE lights. A DE can handle a 5x5 sqft area and has amazing penetration power, so it'd be a bit pointless if you couldn't grow them taller than 2 ft as you're missing out on what it is they provide for you.

Consider this. With a SE 1000w light you can grow plants to be 4-5 ft tall and fill a 4x4 sqft area when you have 8 ft ceilings. With the DE, you would only be able to grow the plants 2, maybe 3ft tall and fill a 5x5 sqft area. In 8ft ceilings/tents, the SE would provide a 64-80 cubic foot area where as the DE would provide 50-75 cubic foot area. As you can see, even if you could make the 1000w DE work in an 8ft tall set up, you wouldn't be taking full advantage of the light's footprint and as a result wouldn't really see too many of the benefits.

I've been looking into them too, until I can get into a place where the ceilings are a good 10-12ft high I simply can't optimize a 1000w DE. For most growers, the SE bulbs are actually better because it is more easy to take full advantage of the light footprint of a SE bulb as opposed to a DE. Not many of us could take full advantage of DE bulbs unfortunately :(
