I bought a 4 camera setup on newegg.com for 100 bucks and then put a 500g hard drive in it for 60$. next year I'll upgrade to a 9 cam system and spend like 500-700 at fryes.

Yea the costco ones are pretty nice and they'll replace them no problem but they seem to kick in to IR mode during the day and you have to flash them .. I cant remember with either a lazer or a flashlight to make them kick back over. My friend uses 2 of these setups from costco at his place of business.

I set up a lot of systems. The costco or whatever chinese crap does work ok for what it is. What you really want is the motion detection tiny wireless network camera send pictures to your cell phone when someone shows up at your grow. Unfortunately this costs about two grand :) Realize that with a dvr system, you can't do playback when someone stole your plants and dvr.

Seriously, knowing who has been poking around your house, what cars drove by and whether or not your house is surrounded by a swat team has its advantages.

I saw one unit which is wireless and transmits over cellular networks. It takes a snapshot when something moves and sends it to your phone. Don't have it pointed at your plants Doh.

Mines connected to my router and accessible through the net and I've even got an app that allows me to watch live feed whenever I like. It also allows for recording onto any of my pc's hard drive as well as the hardrive inside the actual unit.

Its nice I like it because when one of my wireless motion sensors goes off I just glance at my monitors and I know whats up.

They are kinda pricey but I have 2 of the outdoor Logitech Alert security cameras with infrared and motion activated recording. The bad thing is that you need to have a Windows computer running in order to be totally safe as the recordings are saved to a SD card on the camera when the PC is off. This means, if the thieves steal your camera with the SD card you will not even know who did it :-(

My other Cisco web cams work with my Synology NAS drive so no need to leave a computer on for those....but they are indoor cams and do not have night vision.
