Iris' are rhizomes, you don't bury them all the way. The bottom half of the rhizome is under the soil with the top half sticking out. I know it seems wierd, but it's how they work. The mistake a lot of people make is they bury them all the way and then they rot.

Daylily's are really easy to grow and they spread pretty fast. The ones with the orange blooms grow on the sides of the roads here.

That autumn Sedum I was talking about is a succulent. Easy to grow, if you break some off you just stick it in the ground. Butterflies love that stuff when it blooms too.

Are you planting in sun or shade?
Yes, I buried the rhizomes only just below the surface, I wasn't sure so I looked it up. :) They started to sprout, then the cat laid on them, only some have some green, others look pretty sad all the way to the ground (they were planted kind of in a line). Fucking cat. Thing is, daffodils and similar grow wild here, grow like CRAZY. EVERYONE has irises of all sorts, and I think they're one of my favorite flowers.

Until the cedars grow in, it's pretty much full sun, red clay broken up by rock.

It seems like when I have something special I want to grow my dog digs it up. She doesn't dig that often, just when she thinks I'm paying attention to something. My Lemon Thyme, dug up, my Irish eye daisy's - dug up, I moved them, dug up again, now they're out front where she doesn't go. My Oregeno, dug up. Marjoram as well.

Ssshhhh, she hasn't dug anything up this year, maybe she's growing out of it.

Crazy critters. Did you plant some catnip for your cat? Mine love that and wheat grass and I have one that is fascinated with Sage for some reason. Maybe you could plant things to lure the cat away from the Iris'.

Hmm... that's a thought. I'm a zone 7a-7b (usually doesn't get below 25F in winter, but there are times when it sure in hell does). The zones, to me, aren't quite complete, because it seems that it's not just about what time of year it gets cold or how cold it gets, it's also about rainfall, summer highs, and so on.

I'm in zone 5 and sometimes it gets below zero in the winter. The wind chill can be really nasty. I'm not sure how catnip would do in a warmer zone, I would think it would be ok, and the wheat grass I bought that seed pack at petsmart in the cat section. They suggest you grow it inside, but I planted mine outside last summer and it made it through the winter just fine. My brother tried to grow his inside but it died, I tried to tell him :)
