Seed Germination Issue

Hello all, this will be my first grow and I had 7 feminised auto seeds to work with.

  • 3 World of Seeds Kush Ryder
  • 2 Dinafem WW
  • 1 Blimburn AK47
  • 1 G13 Diesel
I dropped in distilled water the first night most of the seeds sank, with the exception of 2 WoS KRs. Night 2: Moved all the seeds to a wet paper towel. All seeds sprouted with the exception of the 2 WoS. Night 3: still have not sprouted and they looked like they were pretty healthy seeds. Has it taken anyone else longer than 3 nights? SHould I give up on these.

Some seeds could take a week to germinate.

I start seeds directly into a soil-less mix, in 4 inch containers or red cups.

Some might even surprise you and come up a few weeks later. There's seeds for other plants in the world that take months before they show signs of life, consider yourself lucky you're trying to grow mj

What's the temp in your propagation area?
Sometimes I have to put mine over a floor vent or heating pad to get the desired germination and sprouting temps....
Humidity plays a factor too... it's nice to have some....
when I have seeds that dont germ like the others, I plant them in a small soil-less mix and cover with a clear tupperware to trap the moisture...

As a rule domes are not good for seedlings. Not unless your RH is way low like lower than 30%, and if you do use a dome make sure the vents are open and do not leave standing moisture or mist excessively.

Pathogenic fungi such as pythium and damping off also enjoy warm, humid environments and can kill the seed\seedling. Seeds just need moisture, darkness and some warmth to germinate. Patience is also important.

Dont soak or any of that crap...Either drop seed in some MOIST soil or a rapid rooter, which is wat I prefer.Leave it be! The initial bit of water is more then enough to get the seed germinated and breaking ground.Dont look at it, touch it or think about it for 5 days.

I've never had a seed take more than 6 days to fully germinate.
Method - Day 1-3: Seeds in water, Day 4-6: Seeds in paper towel

I germinate in a paper towel over night- 2 days..if they haven't cracked yet don't worry about.. then wet my happy frog (in solo cups with slits at the bottoms)and let drain for 2o minutes..plant seed 1/4 inch- 1/2 inch, cover lightly with soil. I put 12 solo cups in a fridge with a 200 watt cfl hovering above em... **SLIP Zip lock baggies over the top and seal what you can...BAM.. heat and humidity!....**once I see 2 sets of leaves I remove the baggies.....Water ONLY WHEN THE SOIL IS DRY AND THE CUP FEELS LIGHT!!! I've had 100% success.20 plus beans..2 grows ONLY 1 runt which I whacked the first week...

Some seeds do not respond well to submersion method and prefer contact- either with paper twels, rockwool, rapid rooters, peat pellets etc....
If not sprouted- place between 2 damp folded paper towels , place on a stoneware plate and wrap in plastic OR put inside a clean CD/DVD case in a dark warm place -- in a day or 2 they should sprout....

Good Luck!

I think my max was 12 days.

I already liked this post but had to quote and repeat it.

And then for seeds the dome is not to keep humidity level high for the plant (like with clones) but to keep the rapid rooter, jiffy pot, or as I use "spongepots" humid. Once they popped their leafs you can remove the dome (indeed unless humidity is 30% or lower) or make vent hole in the dome. Temperature is much more important (cold and wet equals dead)

Thanks for information fellas. The room temperature is between 70-75 degrees. I'm going to go home and check again this evening. Hopefully I see signs.

Oh and the main reason I went from Seed Germination to 3 Gal Pot was because I read that you're not suppose to transfer Autoflower plants as the stress is too much. Can anyone confirm?

So I went from germination straight to 3 gal pot. I presoaked the 3gal pot of roots organic a few hours ahead, then I planted 1/4 inch deep and misted the area followed by a slight pour.

First rule of grow club is to be patient. 3 days ain't nothin brah. Keep it low and slow. Good luck.

I cannot confirm it specifically for auto flowers because I don't do auto, but I can confirm nevertheless that it's better to keep transplanting to a bare minimum, ideally don't do it all. That's also what the rapid rooters/jiffy pots and spongepots are for. It's oversimplified put a small piece of soil already, and if you time it right (don't wait too long with roots appearing at the bottom) it won't be really transplanting at all.

If you don't use a dome and jiffies or whatever box for germinating, might as well germinate directly in the gal pot (if you can keep the inside of those warm enough). As they sing in an old Dutch reggae song, roughly translated: no messing about with pre-germination and that sort of stuff, the plant knows self best when it should come up.

That completely makes sense, I have the 7 3 gal pots in my tent right now, which resides in my bedroom. The tent is zipped up half way and the bedroom is closed with a space heater and a humidifier. Set to 75 degrees farenheit.

Yep-- Autoflowers do NOT like being transplanted because it forces them to expend too much energy on re-rooting & acclimating instead of growing/maturing before they bloom...

Use a rapid rooter, rockwool cube, peat pellet etc... to sprout next time-- then as soon as it opens its 2nd set of true leaves OR you start to see tips of roots--plant it in it's planter.

This allows you to know it is sprouted, and well rooted without disturbing the root system! ;)

As many posters have said above, lower temps will slow down the germination of your seeds more than any other factor. and if you leave them in the paper towel for too long sometimes the small roots kind of rot away and the seed is ruined, I bought a couple of heated propagators from the local garden centre, they are great for popping seeds, just put your damp paper towel folded over your seeds into a small sealed Tupperware dish and then stick it in the propagator, Ive known them to sprout half inch roots overnight. also when the plants are growing normally and low temps come along you can use the propagator base ( Plugged in of course ) to give a little bottom heat to a couple of pots, and they only use around 15W of electricity. Good Luck
