Seedling LIGHT questions?!

So, first of all, I have a 4x4 tent with a dimabel 1k MH-HPS combo,
Air cooled hood and a 6 in 400cfm fan pulling air out of the tent causing negative pressure kinda sucking in fresh air


I have the light as high in the tent as it will go
The glass about 4ft 8inches above germinated planted seeds

I have the light set to 1k
The temps down by the cups (pots) is around 72-80°
Avarage is about 76

And the temp above my light is about 71-76°

My question is, is the light gonna be to much for the seedlings? I've read and heard people saying don't put seedlings under such a powerful light,
They'll die.


I'm wondering if it's due to temp or due to too much light ??
Or if it's just BS


For some reason I have to see for myself

I believe the 1k mh isn't more powerful than the sun

So I figure it'll work?
Because seedlings come up in nature.

I'm looking for people to comment back that have experience with 1kmh and seedlings

Is there any reason you'd advise to use cfl or t5, other than they don't need that much light ?
Will it hurt them or burn them ?

Or possibly power bill..
Which I'm not concerned about

I'm one who likes to know how things work.


Sometimes people just hear things and do it blindly with no knowledge as to why

For one thing, a lot of people (including me) change their HID bulbs (in my case a 600-watt HPS) every other grow, because of bulb degradation. And HID bulbs are expensive. And use way more electricity.

CFLs and T5s generate way less heat.

I'm going to bet you an ounce of my recently grown C99 that HID light can damage seedlings. If not directly, then by their superior penetration through grow medium (rockwool or plugs) to damage shallow, sensitive roots of seedlings. But I don't know for sure.

You can use hid if you like, its gotta start off far away though and its common sense the medium will dry out much quicker. You dont need it for the first few weeks untill they get 3/4 nodes deep untill then, it wont make much of a difference if your plant doesnt have enough foliage to make use of that much light. You can use 23 watts per seedling for a week or two, you'll save electricity since its a concern.

Lol well I'm not really a betting man

Anyways I have my ballast set to 1k
And I have 20-30+ brand new hps and mh bulbs

We shall see how they turn out...

With temps in order, the medium staying moist and the light 4-5 feet away I think it'll work

ey should be ok. But its really a waste of electricity. I always start mines with cfls then switch to hps when I start to flower.

It doesn't make sense to run that light for seedlings. Go to home depot or Lowes and buy a 4ft shop lamp with a couple tubes. (Do research on proper light spectrum) Maybe $30-40. Or you can buy the nice t-5 setup at the hydroshop for around $200. Switch to the halide when they put a set of full leaves on (2-3 nodes).... Put the shop lamp about 5-6 inches above your cups or plants. They wont burn, but you want to get proper depth from the light. Goodluck bro

Start with fluorescents or cfls... They have the correct light wave lengths for seedlings and will produce more developed nodes than your hids from far away. Also they give off far less uv which can damage young seedlings. Although I will
Say I have heard of many growers on RIU having success using 250w mh for seedlings.

The spectrum is right from a MH for vegging & that's what I'm trying to do

I've been reading on this all day

I think people most fail to keep healthy seedlings under a MH due to heat and how close they have the light

The spectrum from a t5 with a 6500k bulb is also good for veg

.......I've been growing seedlings this way since I was a teenager. Most of my experience is outdoors, but seedlings I have down to a science. I don't understand why members ask questions they know the answer to... Causes confusion

Cfl will run less then $7 I believe you want 6500k

I have tried with 600w mh and learned the hard way. So I can't imagine much success with a 1k mh. I actually use 8000k which isn't common but works great for me, but your correct 6500k is what is normally suggested. Also remember what is good for veg and what is good for seedlings are not the same.

Just smoked a bowl of nothing but red hairs lol


Anyways Is it too much heat or too much light why it won't work?!?

Just why? Why would you use something THAT powerful? It's not necessary. Why would you blow electricity. Especially when our community faces scrutiny, about how reckless we are with resources... But anyway way less wattage and lower temps, but more importantly less intensity.
There's always more than one way to skin a cat... If you want to take that route, feel free.
I'm lit too. Pineapple express haha

Yes they do come up in nature during the spring when it's not hot and there is plenty of low light days with very little uv.

OP you could definitely run that much, paying mind to temps and moisture levels, hard to get too much light otherwise. that's a hell of a light setup. I didn't care about power first run, efficiency is a factor, have to consider best methods, call it a science.
